I was wondering what the best sounding/good performance muffler for the best price was for a HO 5.0 with shorty headers, 2.5" true duels, and no cats would be. I looked at the sticky chart at the top of this page and started looking at the flowtech mufflers online. I found that their red hots are only 18 bucks each. But with being so cheap, does that mean you're getting what you paid for? I was looking into them bc I really want to put tips on that look like the tips on a fox body Mustang. I really like the long crome tip with no muffler showing. But I have never seen it done so Im not sure how good it would really look. Also I have lowered my bird a bit and plan to go a little lower down the road and Im afraid I wont be able to do those tips bc I cannot put a normal shaped muffler anywhere besides behind the rear wheels bc my exhaust already bottoms out on stuff. I also looked at the Flowtech Warlock and would love to do those. But I wouldnt be able to do the tips I want. So I guess Ill aske this too, what tips look good on our car with the mufflers behind the rear wheels? If anyone has any suggestions or tips let me know bc I really would appreciate them.

I'm runnin thrush welded mufflers i picked up from advance auto parts a while back for like 40 bucks a peice. i like'em they sound really mean too. i've got true duals with an x-pipe,2.5'' all the way back and the mufflers at the very back. i've got some pics in my gallery of them and on a thread on here too. hope this helps.

Are you talking about the tips in your 15th picture in your gallary? Bc I really do like those. Where are your mufflers located? Thanks for the help.

If you want "Install and forget" mufflers go Magnaflow. They are highgrade stainless with great welding. After replacing a 2 year old set of Flowmasters on my nephews car I will never use anything but stainless, at least not here in Florida. If you are going to run cats you can get away with just the dual in/dual out belly muffler. If you are not running cats you will want to add the rear resonator/mufflers (I learned this the hard way). Part #'s for 2.5" are:

I'm partial to Borla's... I think you could find them on Ebay for 150 for the pair shipped. maybe cheaper. I have had 2 sets. the Cougar got 2.25 inch and the bird has 2.5 inch. I'll try and have an updated Sound clip of the bird on the Dyno in about 2 weeks with the new exhaust sytem. I replaced the Front section with Stainless Steel Mandrel Bent 2.5inch with Xpipe instead of the 2.25 downpipes with H pipe. It really gave it a deeper tone.

I've never build a 5.0L, always been a 4.6L modular guy but there is nothing like flowmasters on a 5.0L, just my opinion.
Yup, when you want to sound like every other Mustang in town. :tongue:

While there are mufflers that will out flow a glass pack design, it also depends on the design. Does the glasspack use "louvers or perforations" - Louvers reduce the flow by as much as 50% but Allied resonators (that sell for $20-$40) each and available at any muffler shop) installed backwards in independent test flowed 90%+ of a "race spec muffler". Others using other brands consistantly showed similar results.

By priority....

1. The one that fits & gives you ground clearance
2. The one that sounds the best (have your muffler guy cut off your pipes, then hold each type of muffler up with the engine running and rev'd a little to see which one you like the best. The point of all the info is, you don't have to spend $200+ on a muffler to make a engine sound good and perform.

There is more than performance to look at. My exhaust sounds the same today as it did 3 years ago. Stainless still cleans up nice. That muffler test is antique. Just like too big of pipes will cost you power. Big in, big out, pay a pro to design the cam to utilize it best for the weight and cubic inch of your setup. It is 2010, not 1965. Why do Nascar drivers get upwards of 7 mpg at 200mph when they used to get 1.5 mpg. Could it be due to the fact they have advanced beyond the typical bs? Go figure. Of course, this last year one of the Nascar team owners tried to go smaller exhaust to get more torque off the corners on a short track. His cars ended up 30th and back when they normally were in the top 10. Seems the cars just would not accelerate down the short straight. Hmmmmmmm, some times maybe we should just let old ideas go! Oh, and by the way, he neglected to let his cam designer know. Now why would that make a difference? Again, hmmmmmmmmm.

I might be white trash.....but I took a sawzall to the mufflers on my 95 4.6 and took it down the street and had pipes run out where the muffs came out. Sounds friggin fantastic!

right! ive been thinking bout jus sawing off the mufflers and buying new ones before it needs inspected in november. i bet that sounds beastly

Derrtydunk good luck with that... The pipes back there are less than 2 inches. It's just better to have someone make you up some pipes and do true duals. The easiest way is to get the mandrel exhaust system. It requires few modifications to the O2 bungs and then have your mufflers put up there. The whole kit in Stainless is about 650 dollars. Throw your mufflers on there and boom.

I like Magnaflow. Clean, deep sound. No raspiness or drone. The stainless still looks good after three years.
