I was hauling some wood for my dad in his 92 ford ranger and afterwards i mistakenly used his keys to unlock my driver side door on my t-bird. In fact it wasnt till i put it into the ignition that i realized i had the wrong set of keys. It wouldnt start my car or unlock anything but the driver side door but it would unlock it everytime.It was just wierd and was wondering if anything similiar had happened to anyone else

I have a Chevy truck that's the same way. I locked the keys in it, and just for ****s and giggles, I grabbed another chevy truck door key of the same year, and it worked.


So much for security...

you can steal/start a late 80's toyota pickup with a flathead screwdriver... but uh... you didnt hear that from me. :angel2:

i merely found that out when i was playing a practical joke on my friend by moving his truck. he didnt laugh.

My friends '79 Ford pickup truck used the same ignition key as my other friends '88 Mustang GT.

If you actually try it you'll find that many keys are duplicated all the time. There are only so many combinations available and they make millions of cars so...

I had a rental Expedition when I was in FL, and went out to get in it, and hit the remote unlock button, and an Explorer that was right next to me unlocked the doors, it was a rental from the same company also, so I don't know if that had something to do with it, but we had fun with the guy setting the panic off when he was getting ready to get in the thing.

That's pretty weird, they should work on different frequencies, oh well :D

I bet most of that is curbed with the pats keys now. Just sucks when you need to get a new one cut....

Sorry, PAT's = Passive Anti Theft System. The newer Ford keys have resistive codes in them that if they dont match the cars computer, wont start it. You can program new keys as long as you have 2 originals, or 1 according to some. The blanks cost around 40 bucks and wal mart doesnt have em. My Focus and F150 both use Pats keys. most of them are pretty thick. Please dont ask how I had to learn all this....Hope that clears it up.

OK - now I know what you were trying to say.

I myself have PATS in my Mark VIII, and was hoping you weren't under the impression you had to get dealer programming whenever you got a new key. They ARE user programmable as long as you have at least 1 functioning one - you don't need 2. Now if you HAVE lost all your keys, then you DO have to have a dealer hook up an NGS or WDS system for reprogramming.

What really pisses me off is these guys who are constantly selling programming instructions for these keys and remotes on eBay to unsuspecting users, saying it will save the ~$80 dealer reprogramming charges. This info is freely available in the owners manuals, and also several sites on the Internet. And if a user HAS lost all his keys, these "instructions" won't save the user a dime - he STILL has to go to a dealer in this situation...

Yeah my sister in law had a "new" expedition she just bought. She tied her keychain to some helium balloons she bought for her kids at the carnival they went to that night. They didnt quite weigh enough and she could do nothing but watch her keys dissapear into the sky never to be seen again. Thats how we learned about PATS.......

...hopefully some creep with newfound keys isnt learning about it as well.

My friends mom got into another person's Ford escort at a parking garage and unlocked started it up and drove down the streeet and realized it wasnt hers. THat is messed up!

You would think so. And I don't mean sometimes. Everytime you hit the button the door would open if it was closed or close if it was open.

The first time this happened I thought hmmm, they want me to come in through the walk in door in the garage to the house. Surprise, it was locked.:confused: :confused: :confused:

Just FYI...
On most 1998 and all 1999 and newer Ford vehicles they have what is called PATSII. You MUST have 2 working keys to program another on a PATSII vehicle. By working, I don't just mean mechanically where it will turn in the cylinder. I mean they must be programmed to start the car. If the computer doesn't recognize 2 programmed keys you aren't getting anywhere.
If you have a newer Ford vehicle and you only have 2 keys then you need to get another one from Ebay and take it to the hardware store to get it cut. Don't worry when they tell you that they don't cut those and/or can't guarantee it because it needs to be programmed. As long as they can instead of just don't want to cut it. Some places have a newer style idiot proof key cutting system that takes cartridges and they really can't cut one.
If you can get one cut you can program it if you have 2 more that work on PATSII or one that works with regular PATS.

dont buy pats keys off ebay, you dont know your getting the right one! there is a dozen different keys. personally over the counter here i get 25 per key and my shop gets 40 to program. and if you lose both keys, call a tow truck and take to your nearest ford linc , merc dealer! and john 40 for a key , ow!
