I think I was either flushing my cooling system or trying to get to the EGR valve to clean it when I noticed this loose connector. That attempt was made some years ago and I took these pictures then. I am fairly certain that connector has to attach to something but I have no idea where it would be. I have not checked from underneath. I drive a 1995 Cougar with a 4.6L V8. The pictures were taken at the rear of the engine on the passenger's side. A vacuum manifold and the transmission dipstick are visible and it's all I can do just to touch it. What does this connector go to?

That goes to the cold engine lockout sensor on the metal coolant pipe that comes out from the valley under the intake, which connects to the outlet of the heater core. If you have SATC it keeps the heater from coming on until the engine is modestly warm. Otherwise you can ignore it.
