97 Cat 4.6 with 83K miles. Two weeks ago when the car was shifting from 2nd to 3rd, there was a few second pause and then a loud BANG when it went into gear. This went on a few more times then I drove it to the trans shop in second gear. They had it for a week test driving it but could not get it to happen again. Plus, no codes were thrown. I had them change the fluid and filter as it had not been done in over 20K.

Today, out of the blue, the shift point from first to second is at 3400 rpm!! It then proceeds to shift fine into 3rd & 4th. Also, at highway speed (60+) a punch to the floor produces a downshift and no engagement (rpms head for the red zone).

Any ideas about this behavior? the car has not been abused.

Thanks in advance,

Tony:bangwall:

I know it's a holiday weekend but if someone can give me some idea of the loss of second gear before I take it in, it would be appreciated.!

Thanks,

Tony:(

Sounds like the intermediate one-way clutch has broken. If you get this trans rebuilt make sure they add the mechanical diode one-way clutch and a spiral lock ring.
