My 94 cougar is in bad shape in the trans department, 205k miles and it started acting up around 125k miles my brother said and he gave it to me because nobody around here could figure out the problems it is having.

Initially it would hesitate to shift 1-2 it would wind tight in 1 then drop hard into 2, he had solenoids replaced and it helped it for a while.

After that it began to totally skip 2nd gear and go from 1-3 with a long wait between, occasionally you would hear a small grind like it was trying to shift 2nd but not going in.

It would go 1-3-4 and lock up fine in 4th then after time it quit shifting into 4th so it was only 1-3 and reverse.

I've read a bit about the trans in the 94s that they weren't the greatest, I have a feeling that most of the guts of the one I have are primarily grenaded.

So I guess my question I'm getting at is whether the trans I have would be worth doing a full rebuild on, or if I would be better off finding a newer one from a 96 and putting it in?

I plan in the future to do some engine work as this will be my fun car, probably up the compression a little bit and do cams and exhaust but no SC or turbo or NOS, I want it to be reliable and run on pump gas but still have some snap when I mash on it.

I would like to have a trans that will handle the added power first so that I already have it when I get to doing the motor as I don't want to do the trans twice preferably.

Get a built 4r70w thats 98-04 or something like that maybe newer than 04 but not sure when the 4r70w was phased out. Your valve body is the worst design. Nothing is good about your trans from a performance view. Also get a one piece aluminum drive shaft. The stock 2 piece POS will vibrate your trans ruining the rear tail shaft seal and even ruining your diff. If you swap out the trans get a high stall torque convertor the stock one you have now is junk just like the trans, thank you ford. A TC trans and tune will bark your tires on a shift if you mash the go pedal.

The next thing I must find out then is if there is a reputable builder anywhere in or near Kansas that I could source one of these trans from for a fair price?
There are a few trans shops nearby to be but I trust them no further than I can swim in a lead suit. Many people I know around here end up with junk transmissions that only last 30k at best and pay top dollar for them.
I can get a used 4r70w from the local salvage yard for $600 but they're unsure of the mileage and year and only offer a 30 day guarantee and I don't believe in spending that much for used parts.
What should I be willing to shell out for a *good* built trans and TC together? I've been running my own shop here for the last 2 years and I'm good with finding cheap import and GM parts because that's the stuff that people always need replaced, this is the first trans I will have ever replaced in any ford product that I've worked on.
From my experience when people bring me about any ford product with a problem it is usually just battery terminals need cleaned or replaced or they bring it in for maintenance(plugs/wires/fluids/filters)
I'm used to getting used trans for most anything gm related for $300 or less with 80k miles or less with usually about $60 in freight. I have a feeling that won't be the case with a good 4r70w though :(

We can use Gran Marquis, Crown Vic non-police, or mustang trannys up to early 03.

An 03 may or may not have the 8 teeth on the output shaft that we need for the Vss sensor; look to be sure before buying.

I have 02 transmissions; they have most of the mods done to them internally; a jmod for those is a couple of holes and spring changes. :)
