hey guys i found a V8 down the street from me for sale and it has been off the road for 2 years now. the body has no major rust or dents in it. paint job is still nice. it's a 94 with 112K mi. the only thing wrong with it is the guy said one day he was driving on the highway and when he went to the off ramp and came to a stop then tried to go again he said you would go to take off and your foot would be on the gas but it would not pick up speed. and when u go into reverse it would just stop i guess. i haven't tried to drive it or anyhting this is all he said from the phone call. got new tires maybe 300mi on them interior is in fine condition. said may be a mouse living on there but no holes so that's just a cleaning job, and also he lost the trunk key. he told me that ppl told him it may be a tourque conveter or a tranny thing. i am really pumped if it's something more minor to fix and cost less money. he said thesuspension and everyhtign body wise was fine when he was driving it. he's sellin it cuz he don't have the money to fix it. he lettin it go for $750 as listed on the sign but i haven;t talked to him on tryin to get it lower. even tho $750 is low u can always try to go lower lol. and being a '93 V6 owner now i would LOVE to grab a V8.

does anyone know what may be wrong with this bad boy?

any replys would be great

Thanks Dean

its a 94 with a 4.6L 4R70W auto trans. Only tbirds to come with a manual trans were the SCs.

I'd guess its either the trans or the TC :) prolly something in the trans gave out...Check the tranny fluid first, if it smells burnt or is dirty, then a good assumption would be that the trans is fried.

Well, if you want a really good trans, PM Darrin for a fully built transmission that will last you forever. Other than that, find a used, low mileage one and J-mod it. If you have plans to modify the car at all, I would go with one of Darrins trans...Hope that helps..

As far as cost goes, that depends...You can get a used one for a couple hundred, but if you go the "smart" way, plan on a grand or more...check the Group purchase thread as there is a GP going on for Darrins transmissions...I am pretty sure it is still active.

thanks for the reply. i prob won;t plan on goin too far with the mods on it. so i don;t need a high end one. just ones that will last a little while and makes the car move lol.i'll check out Darrin and see what he has for me.

thanks again

A '94 V8 T'bird for 750.00???? Where?!! Where?!! :D If you can, or if you know, or if you can get a code scanner (the car is an OBD II), check for a trouble code. Of course that will mean that the battery will need to be charged, the car recently running or something there abouts. Start the car, see how it does run. MAF's were a trouble source? Hint!! ;)

well the only problem is that i don;t think u can get too far driving it. the guy says it will start but as far as going for a test drive i dunno how drivable it is. if i did hook up a scanner to it would it pick up on a tranny problem with it sitting there or would i have to be driving it to have it get something?

Start it. See how it idles. Shift the trans thru the gears while you are sitting there (does it go from rev. to drive and back?). Listen for any motor noise ( a slight clicking sound coming from the injecters is normal), Listen for any misses (plugs, wires), Look for smoke out the tail pipe. Take it for a drive around the block, even if you have to restart it 20 times. Is the "check engine light" on? That indicates there is/are trouble codes (yes, you will get some trans. codes). If it has been sitting for a while, it will need fresh gas!!! Check the air filter( may indicate if he took care of it, because if it is real dirty, he didn't). Wear old clothes and be ready to get dirty if you really want it. Remember, todays cars run longer, cleaner, smoother and faster than ever before (especially the Ford Mod motors). The problem will be something stupid that he was to lazy to check, or too afraid to, because he thought it was going to cost a fortune ;) . It may be as simple as a senser change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Assuming the body and undercarriage are straight, nice interior, no smoke or motor noises, scarf it up!! Brakes, tires, shocks, etc. are maint. items and are usually considered non-incidentales (unless it is a known problem area). For instance, the MN12's are known for front rotor warpage due to excessive heat buid up. Cure, upgrade your rotors and pads (an easy fix). But if, for instance, you do need to rebuild the trans., that could be costly (2,000 or more). Do your home work (like you are now), and really try to drive the car. After all, it has been sitting for a while, it's cheap, he's not really pressed to sell it (except to get rid of it). :D

well i finally went to look at it today.... we let it run for a lil and then it started to smoke. the smoke seemed to be comming down under the car where the tranny stick is to check the tranny fluid. not ALOT of smoke but you could nitice it. i know the smell of burning oil and it didn;t smell like that so i was thinking maybe it was the tranny fluid burning off the exhaust pipes maybe. everyhting works on it windows power seats etc.

with the tranny it goes forward and reverse and u can hear it engage into gear but when i put it into reverse and put my foot on the gas it didn;t move at first(maube cuz it was in a rut on grass) but then i pushed the gas more then it seemed to stick and then it moved.

after sitting for 2 years we let the battery charge for maybe 5 min and it started right up. no abnormal noises exhaust sounded solid. no burning oil smoke out of exhaust.air filter was clean(was replased before it broke on the guy) prob need a total tune up like usual for newly bought cars. new tires prob only 300 mi on them.

anyhtign else i should take a peek at?

the fluid level might be low because the car may have a leaking seal at the tranny dipstick tube to tranny.

could bad tranny fluid or lack of tranny fluid cause it to jerk and have problems like i said?

Gee, if it seems solid, buy it. How do the ball joints look? Are the boots ripped? How's the boots on the halfshafts and steering rack? The uppers are easy and (relatively) cheap to replace, I think less than $180 for both cuz you gotta replace the entire control arm. Lowers are press in. Don't worry about the rear swaybar bushings, I consider these a normal wear item like tires...easy to change. Is the steering "tight", working without any abnormal slop or play? Does the brake pedal feel right? Check for water spots/marks under the dash, this can indicate the car was flooded at one point. Put on the defroster and heat...does it blow air, or spray a mist that smells like engine coolant? Good luck, and if you purchase it let us know how it is! :) Yeah, if you need a cheap tranny, contact Greenleaf (www.greenleafauto.com), ask around in the Drivetrain forum for specifics, or PM me, I purchased from them. Oh, don't buy another tranny '95 or older. Get at least a '96 model, but you should really try for a '98+.

Also, check out those 300mi tires. If the car has been sitting for 2 years, they likely have flat spots and may need to be replaced.
