I understand the need for a visible external cutoff switch, but why is it necessary only if the battery is relocated to the trunk? Would the need not be as great in the event of an emergency if the battery was in it's original location?

I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with the battery being so close the the gas tank when it is located in the trunk!!!!

Maybe its more that if you are going fast enough that you would ever really need the battery shut off, that you would have already relocated it.
