Thanks for the tip Darren. I have a feeling the best teacher for this kind of thing is experience. ;)

Now all I need to do is go back up this Friday and get my 13 second pass... and see if I can get 100 MPH out of it. Pretty sure I've got both in the bag, but until I get that time slip I can't say I did.

October 2 test and tune at 6 PM... anyone else in?

Hopefully the Chevy guys can refrain from spitting engine guts and juices all over the track this time.

Over at Norwalk just this past Friday. I'm going again this Friday, not sure yet if 97CatMan can make it but I'm thinking he'll be there. ;)

I'm going to try.

I normaly need to give a heads up at work. But we saw how well that worked last Friday lol.

Unfortunately I really do run in a 100 air mile radius. Cover ten counties and have the longest run in our terminal. Friday's are the worst day of the week. It's air freight and it really HAS to be picked up and delivered. Otherwise it doesn't happen till Monday. And that's a big deal when someone's paid potentially thousands of dollars. Some times I have ground frieght I can shrug off. But Friday's are all about air freight pickups. The space is normally pre booked on a plane. Miss a pickup and miss getting it to its destination terminal in time to get loaded and you might just find yourself getting charged back for the wasted space. So there's just a tiny bit of pressure.

Hooping this Friday works out better. And no one turns the track into a giant slip and slide. That was a unusual amount of down time for them. They used to get things cleaned up a lot quicker.

but yeah I want to go and have some more fun.

As it turns out, last Friday night was the test and tune immediately before the ACCEL series championships - which explains why it was so busy that night. Last night was a great night overall because there was nothing at the track the day after - and with the insane winds and threat of rain, only a handful of people showed up.

We stayed about 3 hours and I got 5 passes in, with tune modifications and adjustments between each run. Unfortunately I didn't get a good launch on any of my passes... but I did manage to set a new personal best ET and MPH despite that, finally breaking into the 13s. My times were terribly inconsistent.

This is the video the wife shot from the stands of that pass. I was lined up against a new '15 Vette which ran high 11s.

<iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NqmycJN-AgM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

13.957 @ 97.56 (IIRC, I'll update when I dig out the slip later)

I think I'm content with the results for now. I don't think I can manage a serious improvement to ET or MPH without better tires; from a tuning standpoint I got exactly what I was after - some data to refine the high load/RPM fueling and spark in the tune which I had not previously been able to do. Plus I've got some good times to compare against any future mods I do (GM's longtubes whenever he does them and possibly a higher RPM friendly intake).

Good times last night. Dropped from the 16.18 or so back into the cars old range 15.90s. Actually ran the cars best time ever at 15.87 and 86-87 MPH with a terrible reaction time into a 20MPH headwind. Go figure. So the cars performance hasn't dropped since 99. So I'm happy.

Other cars going in for the rack job Tuesday and if it's back together by next Friday I'll see how it runs. I want a good base line on that car since that's likely the one getting all the mods.

Next year I think I'm going to go wednsday nights. Open time trials are nice if your diddling with you tune. It's boring running with some 8 second street bike or 12 second Nova. I miss running a split tree and finding yourself door handle to door handle heading into the traps ;)

And congrats to Brandon. He managed to break into the 13's on street tires through iron exhaust manifolds. There WAS a lot of slippage at the track last night. I managed to get rubber going into second in drive with my car.

Congrats on your new best Brandon..It looks like you shot out of the hole pretty good, but had a lot of wheel spin..

What kind of tires are you running?..I mean what brand, and model..

They're Nitto NT555 255/50/17 on 9" rims. I've considered a wider rear tire but can't seem to find one that's sufficiently tall and not obnoxiously wide (plus I can't remember if you need to roll the fenders if the car's not lowered).

I'm sure part of the reason I got so much spin was the low temps. Good air density but lousy for traction with those tires. My runs were terribly inconsistent. First run of the night I launched at 2500 RPM and had a terrible spin recovery after the "launch" and ended up with something low 16, second run I was IIRC 15.5ish. Third run was mid 14, fourth was my best, last run was mid 15.

Yeah, my 14 second pass I was up against some jacked-up Dodge Ram which beat me off the line (like everyone else lol) but I managed to catch and pass him before the finish. I'll upload that video and embed it here shortly...

The idea of bracket racing piques my interest, but since I've no consistency with the car's times so far, I'd probably not be very good at it. I was actually kinda waiting to see if the track guys would let us run together on one of the later runs last night.

The blue Vettes the magic rabbit. I ran my best time against him. Albeit about 15 car lengths behind him ;)

What shape are your toe compensators in? Might consider poly control arm bushings in the spring. Possibly spare set of rims with some tires to barbecue.

I think you'll find that the track is MUCH better when it's 70-80 and warm from the sun shining on it all day. It stays noticably warmer then the ground till past midnight. Several hours after the sun goes down. Big difference.

30 years ago (God has it really been that long) when racing stopped for the night we'd schlep a case of beer out to the track and sit there and soak up the heat like lizards. Cold beer, summer breeze and a little radiant heat. Nice.

In better weather you will launch better. Times will drop. I still think you will hit 13.8x or better just fiddling with the tune and driving style.

Been meaning to dig through my shoebox of old pictures soon. I assume your curious as to what a Single Overhead Cam 427 Side Oiler looks like when it's sitting in a 1974 Mercury Capri?

Just looking at the specs on your tires..They look like a good all around tire..Sure there are stickier tires, but those come with compromises..(Especially in the rain)

It would be nice if someone could loan you a set of slicks..Just to see how much of a better time you squeeze out of your car at the track.. :)

When you buy your next set of tires..Consider looking for something that has a softer compound for better grip..Say 200-250 UTQG..

I'm tire shopping/browsing as we speak..

Several things come to mind. Conventional wisdom says to turn off the traction control and indeed I've always run faster with it off. Given the amount of spin your getting you should at least make a pass or two with it on and see what happens. I doubt your experience is going to different than anyone else's but it's worth checking out.

Tire pressure.

Vary your launch RPM and even try nailing it from a dead stop with the converter unloaded. There may be a sweet spot between getting into the RPM band faster vs reducing wheel spin.

Your car might be a good candidate for a pair off dual fill rear AirLift bags. Increasing the preload on the rear wheels may help as may tuning it side to side.

I doubt any single things a magic bullet but used together may help reduce wheel spin.

I'd start cruising CL for a set of slicks. Keeping in mind once you get the car to launch without spin is when things generally start to break ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but you have Mustang pattern hubs? That would make finding a spare set of rims easier. We might also find a Mustang guy with a spare set borrow for a run or too. Hang out at the track long enough and we will undoubtably meet some Ford people.

Also somewhat sad to note that out of the 75-80 car field Friday the only two MN12s were Brandon and I. Should this become a regular thing next year it would be great to see some other cars show up.

Well... the rear suspension is in desperate need of a rebuild. I've got all the proper parts already accumulated except for the diff bushings, toe links, and lower inner LCA bushings. Hoping that comes this winter. Car needs tie rods too, and I wouldn't mind a rear diff rebuild...

When I was launching Friday I got the worst wheelspin when I launched with the converter loaded. Every launch after that I went from idle; the best launch I don't think I snapped the throttle but eased in over 1/4-1/3 second, even then it spun for the first 20-30' or so.

I think the big contributor was the cold track and tires.

I've got stock MN12 hubs, 4.25" bolt pattern.

If all goes well I'll have all the rear end bushings by then too. My plan is to do all that with the Ford Racing Diff and M8 drive shaft install. Probably wait till spring. Being into overkill I do have a rather large K1 torpedo heater if you want to do them in Winter.

For some reason I was thinking you said those were FR Mustang Rims.

Rebuilt rear suspension, better track conditions, better tires will all help.

Finally got around to snapping a pic and uploading the time slip of my best run so far...

Lots of improvement to be had. That car "should" have 1.8x 60' times in it...
