Been working on getting our 87 Stanza GXE w/automatic trans. up to snuff and I just checked all the fluids and noticed that the trans. fluid looks to be wayyy overfilled for some reason. The trans. is dead cold and the dipstick has 2 notches in it, one marked cold and the other hot. The fluid is about 2 inches or so past the hot mark. It's been slamming into 2nd lately and I have a feeling that this is the cause. Guess it's generating too high of pressure and then bangs into 2nd. The 2-3 and 3-4 is smooth, but getting to OD seems to take a bit longer than I would think.

Should I just siphon out some fluid to bring it down to the right level, or is there some mystical Japanese reason why its like this??? I'm no trans. guru but common sense to me would be yes. Just looking for some imput to make sure I'm not going in the wrong direction here... Oh, and fluid quality looks fine. Needs to be changed, but it's not burnt or anything. Car only has 106K on it.
