Hi guys,
I just added a 1989 SC to the driveway (a friend for the '95 4.6L).
I bought it for $1K knowing it had a misfire on 3 & 4.
A new coil pack, plug wires & DIS module later and I'm hitting on all six and running nicely.
I am, however, still getting a MIL/ check engine light. I can smell that the exhaust is rich when I get heavy on the throttle. I'm assuming this is from the oxygen sensors being 22 years old- giving the EEC a poor signal and subsequently defaulting to a rich condition...
My question is though, who makes or where do I find a good quality scanner/ code reader for my OBD I PCM? everything available out there seems to be focused on OBD II. Autozone had a cheap version that gave you codes with a series of LED light flashes. Not for me.
Ideally, I'd like to have a unit or some software that I can use on the '95 (OBD II), AND the '89 SC (OBD I) and plug into and communicate with on my laptop.

Please let me know if anyone has helpful input-

Use this to check my 1995 f150's codes.
Equus - Digital Code Reader
Was the cheapest reader I could find at Schucks. I wish it came with an extension cord so I could connect it to the port, go through the procedure to pull codes(clutch in, Key On, Engine Off), and read the scanner.

You also should be able to count the Check Engine blinks to get codes, the wife was able to tell me a couple of the codes while I stood over the engine bay.

All the scanners that could read OBD1 & OBD2 where too expensive, was cheaper to buy the reader for the respective port seperatly

Thanks for the heads up!
I checked out the Equus 3145 and it says it has a digital screen so it seems to be better than Autozone's offering.
I found it in town for $29 so I'll pick one up tomorrow and give it a shot.

i went to a buddy of mine whose has a shop. he checked it for free. but his scanner is like a portable computer. big red thing from snap on tools. has a big screen with complete read out explanation, system check etc. his cost like 2g lol

sucks they dont have nice scanners for OBD 1 like they do for OBD II

I use one at work, its really nice. The Solus is like $2000, the Modus (which is what they have at work) is over $7000 with all the attachments. :tongue:

I have used the Modus on all of my cars (Ford OBD I and Ford OBD II) and it is extremely easy to use and very similar between the OBD systems.

Ford OBD I is a fantastic system. :)

auto xray

my codescout 2500 by auto xray seems as good as you need on these cars still basic but affordable

I've used a LabScope before that was great. Got proof of which O2 failed.

Though does seem odd to use tools that cost more than the thing your fixing.

I don't know if your aware but the 89-95 SC's are EEC-IV OBDI

I use the paperclip trick and read the flashes.

Just some FYI becuase code scanners are sooo expensive.

If you plan on spending some $$$, grab yourself a quarterhorse. You can watch all the parameters of your motor....... That's the way to do it!
