Last night on the way home my OD light was flashing at me. I searched but didn't find anything. I had the OD off at the time and the light started flashing. So I pushed the button and the light was still on and flashing but it went into OD. So what does the flashing light mean? I checked the fluid before I left work it was a hair low. I added enough to top it off. I did just put in a tranny cooler so I've been keeping a eye on the fluid to make sure it is full. Any ideas?

if the light flashes, then the transmission threw a code, you can speculate and buy parts you might not need or read the code and trouble shoot properly.

Is a normal OBD2 code reader all you need to read tranny codes? Thanks!

Not so much. You need one capable of the transmission functions and a lot of them don't have that. I don't have a list of which do and which don't unfortunately.

I suppose that autozone dosent have the kind that does. Could you send me a list of the readers that do pull tranny codes? Thanks!

TCIL(Transmission Control Indicator Lamp) flashes if monitored sensors/actuators/circuits have failed, i.e. TCC Solenoid, Shift Solenoids, Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor oe Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid or related circuits. Most common cause is the EPC solenoid or circuit.

There can be dozens of possible codes.

I could swear mine did that the other night also. Just flashed briefly then it went back to normal and stayed off.

Couple weeks ago, I could not get the "O/D Off" light to come on (engage) one night while driving. Next night, it was fine and has been ever since. Been flipping between the two modes just fine.

But then a few nights ago, I'm out and could swear it flashed on/off for a moment...then fine again. During this, the O/D was engaged, light off, just like it's supposed to be at default.

I've only got 49K on the car, but I have been wondering what's going on. Next time I'm out, I'll keep an eye on her and see what happens.

Any thoughts on the next move to make or where to have this checked out, besides the dealer?

Thanx.

Ok, time to renew an old thread (I've been here long enough to know that you shouldn't start a new one unless you have to!)

Like the above poster, I've got a flashing OD light.
But it only does it in third gear, and the colder it is, the more it does it. due to the extreme cold, I figured it just wasn't getting up to operating temperature. (I had a 180* thermostat in the engine, and a tranny cooler from an E-250). Today I took advantage of the warmer weather and put in a 195* thermostat and put some cardboard over the tranny cooler... figuring it'd help it get up to operating temperature during the cold winter months. What do you think? Did I do the right thing? And before you say "have the codes read" I don't have a code reader for that. But I do know the car would barely get up to 180* on a long highway drive in this cold weather... and the T-Stat gasket was bad when I pulled it...

Yea, I know its a long shot... but with the temps being what they have been the changes i mentioned won't hurt anything. I forgot to mention... when I checked it last night about 11:00 it was low on fluid as well. checked it warm, and running. the stick was dry. i added two quarts and made the mentioned changes. just have to wait and see now.

New thermostat, covered the cooler, made sure the fluid level was good... no more flashing light.

Sounds like a pretty good bet.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but a curious mind would like to know under what conditions would one drive with the OD off? I do know it cuts down on the gas mileage but if its there there must be a time and reason to disengage the overdrive function.
