I think you've posted on here about your gas milage before. I have virtually the same car as you, 97 4.6 stock engine. I put 3.73 gears in and removed the air silencer, that's it. I monitor and record all my records and I average about 23mpg and when I cruise anywhere on a roadtrip, I average anywhere from 28-30mpg. And I'm about 210km (145 miles) on that engine.

There has to be something up with your car to be only getting that kind of milage.

I have 2 Cougars, 1996:

Black:

Engine: 4.6l
City MPG: No city driving (1%)
Highway MPG: 26.2 long term avg. (99-now)
Fuel Used: Exxon (Tiger Oil) 93 octane
Average highway speed: 80+
Average Climate: ~50F
Mechanical Mods: Silencer removed
Milage on the engine: 117k (Owned since 30k)
Comments: Inherited this car, totalled it about two years ago; have almost completely restored it (body damage). Drives great.
3.27 locker
Ceramic pads
BFG 225/70H15

Red:

Engine: 4.6l
City MPG: No city driving (1%)
Highway MPG: 21.2 long term avg. (03-now)
Fuel Used: Exxon (Tiger Oil) 93 octane
Average highway speed: 80+
Average Climate: ~50F
Mechanical Mods: Silencer removed
Milage on the engine: 193k (Owned since 130k)
Comments: Bought this car after totalling the black one; at 130k for $3k; immaculate inside; didn't come with ashtrays (strange)
Non locker rear diff, now 3.08; most of data with 3.27 NL
semimetallic pads
BFG 225/70H15 Stock Wheels

Castrol Syntec in both, 5W30. Changed at 3k. Yeah, thats about once a month...

I can't find any reason for the mileage difference; the two cars have been consistent except for problems, which were almost always shown in the mileage first.

I have replaced all the o2 sensors on both cars over time, if the rear ones short they somehow cause problems with the front ones.

I change plugs and wires every two years; transmission fluid as well.

I drive 48 miles one way, five days a week, more if I drive to lunch. Average ~500/wk

I tend to test my speed limiters regularly...

Engine: 4.6L SOHC
City MPG: unknown
Highway MPG: unknown
Fuel Used: 87 octane at moment
Average highway speed: depends on the day, usually 75
Average Climate: Midwest...
Mechanical Mods: See Sig
Milage on the engine: 55K
Comments: Since adding the stock comp and putting the 2.73's in the car....WOW..all I can do is average the mileage per tank(Odometer STILL isn't working) based on round trips to work....67 mile round trip, average 5 round trips per week and misc driving after work. I would guess that I am averaging about 400-425 miles per tank of gas. That's about 25 mpg average.....city and freeway
