comments: im getting better gas milage after the pi swap, and even better gas mileage after being pulled over for reckless driving and aggressive acceleration, and a little exhibition of speed thrown in for good measure. I have a miss at idle and i need to change my plugs some kinda bad. Also have 17x9 rims to roll around too

I spent some time calculating the gas mileage on the trip home, how about that, better gas mileage than the 4.6L. :)

not unless its tuned for it. The car doesn't know what octane it has in it. So running 91 or higher or anything higher than 87 for that matter is just dumping money down the drain..

ok, so if it gets tuned to 91, will MPG increase?

Is there anything else that can be done (mods maybe?) that can increase mileage?

running premium with the tune for it if you can keep your foot out of hte gas is said to give you about 2-3 more MPG...
and viper... if you have no mods and you are stock... I would look into doing some maintenance. My 77 Cougar with a 351 Windsor got better mileage than that on hte interstate doing 80...

Fuel Used: 87 cheapest non-alky
Average highway speed: 70
Average Climate: 76

Comments: Cleaned the MAF (which was nice and shiny in the bore, but dirty in the sensor). Replaced spark plugs. Then the mileage came. MAF brought the low end back as well.

Highway MPG: 20
Fuel Used: 89
Average Highway Speed: 65

Comments: It needs engine, drivetrain, suspension, and brakes rebuilt. Best vehicle I've ever owned, and I love it.

Engine: 3.0 24v
City MPG: 18
Highway MPG: 19.5.
Fuel Used: 89
Mechanical Mods: None.
Miles on Engine: 124000
Comments: Mechanically solid, and serves it's purpose as a daily beater, but it's got interior gremlins and a clunk in the suspension. It doesn't seem to affect the car, and the dealer can't find anything wrong. Hopefully it's the last fwd I ever own.

Comments: 3.73 gears,MarkVIII converter and DS, PI intake and cams, ported heads port matched to NPI gasket 2.25 exhaust with Ultraflo X muffler mounted under tranny. SCT PRP tuned.

Switch to ultraflow x gave me 2-4 mpg. Suspension and alignment getting fixed now.

Average highway speed:65 MPH
Average Climate: NC pretty hot in summer
Mechanical Mods: no cats, flowmasters, cold air induction, a few other minors
Milage on the engine: 114k miles
Comments: I am very heavy on the thottle and fuel filter helps a whole lot. so does cold air induction. If I were to take it easy on the gas and run better octane I bet I could push 20 in the city.

Engine: 3.8
City MPG: combined w/ highway
Highway MPG: combined w/ city 20.5 per gal.
Fuel Used: 91 oct.
Average highway speed: 75-80
Average Climate: 77 f
Mechanical Mods: CAI, autolite platinum plugs, bosch 8mm wires, new ign. control modual, true dual exaust, new fuel filter, and premium fuel (91oct.)
Milage on the engine: about 81,000
Comments: this sucks but seems better than the 13-15 mpg i was getting. i can't really do city mpg seperate from highway mpg because i do both constantly. my dual exaust is also killing my gas mileage because i went the cheap route and got glasspacks, next tax income check i'm going for two magnaflow mufflers so that should help out. but i have noticed a good difference in mileage since i started using 91 oct. instead of 89 oct.

edit: sorry i did a search and failed to realize this thread was in 4.6/5.0
we 3.8ers don't have a thread so i will leave this here.........and why the hell are you guys getting mostly the same if not better mpg than my little v6.......my mpg sucks for a v6....... I'm doing a mpg thread in 3.8/4.2 so i can get an idea of what other v6 owners are getting.

Engine: 2002 Explorer PI 4.6L
City MPG: About 18-20
Highway MPG: Avg 22+, but high of 24.8 and low of 19.9
Fuel Used: Usually 91, occasionaly 89 Safeway gas
Average highway speed: 72 mph(118km/h)
Average Climate: 30 degrees to 110 degrees F
Mechanical Mods: See sig
Milage on the engine: approx 30K
Comments: I drive a majority of freeway miles, although that includes a lot of stop and go from traffic. Sometimes I drive easy, sometimes I drive hard, depends on my mood. My future mods, bigger tires and 3.73's are going to hurt my mileage, but I imagine my new trans will help alleviate it. My stock trans slips a LOT
Update, with the new trans I would say I gained about 2-3 mpg, mostlly on the freeway. Cannot back with numbers since my new 95 SC odometer isnt working correctly.

Also, I would have to say that the V6 prob gets similar numbers because of the power/weight ratio, it weighs similar, but has less torque/hp due to smaller displacement.
