I have been getting the smell of burning antifreeze everytime I drive my car. The smell is coming from the engine. Its not coming through the exhaust. Because I can pop the hood and smell it. I replaced the upper radiator tube and clamped it with a better clamp because that was leaking. That was a while ago and the smell is still there. I don't have any coolant leakage that I can see. WHere do I start. Anyone had any similar problems. 1994 mercury cougar 4.6 stock

Look in the rear of the passenger side and make sure the heater core return hose hasn't rotted or come loose or something.

Be a good idea to check/replace *all* the hoses, not sure about the 4.6 but the 3.8s have a very small hose that's easy to miss with a casual inspection and that's where my leak started. Sounds like you have a pinhole somewhere that's spraying an exhaust manifold...

Also check..

the bottom part of the radiator around the tanks. I had a very small leak where the tanks "crimp" on and it was all evaporating before much of anything got wet.

Took me forever to find the leak!

Whenever the dealership replaces the intake..

They don't replace any hoses. The are so cheap. I had a very small leak on one of mine connected to the heater core that was a result of taking the hose off when servicing it and not replacing it. The hose started to leak more and eventually it leaked enough to where it fouled my rear passenger spark plug. The dealership tried to charge me $100 plus for something they screwed up on. I told them that they were crazy and ordered the hose from a different dealership and installed it in a K-Mart parking lot during my lunch hour in 15 minutes. Moral of the story, replace the hose connecting from the heater core to the inake if they didn't do it and replace the black factory hose clamp as well. It fails too.

actually, just get a cooling system pressure checker. Auto zone should be able to rent it to you. Just snaps onto your radiator cap, and you pump up your system with air, and watch the old leak come spraying out of wherever it is.

yeah the above idea is a good one.

i would guess the heater hoses or side tanks (both already suggested I know), but also check the "weep holes" on your water pump. If the shaft seal inside the pump is bad, the weep holes will weep a small amount of coolant...not enough to see the drips, but enough to smell it.

how much does a water pump usually go for.. my weep hole was shooting out coolant and water this afternoon... took it to the shop they said they would call me when they got a price to fix ..

I paid $35 for mine at Advance. I also needed a power steering pulley removal tool that took me a bit to find, saw one at Autozone for $50. Took me about 4 hours using hand tools in the driveway and 95 degree heat. I'd think a good mechanic in a properly equipped shop could do it an hour. The SC may complicate matters.....

I was told the pump was going to cost me 70 bones.. labor was $40hr.. it took them three hours to work in all together ,,, then at the end of the day I couldn't drive it home cause of another hose leak.....oh do I love my T- Bird..

Hey, don't blame that on the 'Bird... if you had an Honda or Toyota it would've cost twice that for parts *and* labor. All cars have water pumps that fail. Granted their labor rate is low but not all shops have mechanics that can't install a water pump in a huge engine bay much faster than an old fat man in searing heat. And a not that well equipped driveway..... And then not get those hoses right on the first try?

I think I'd try another shop for my next problem if it was me. Sounds like these guys are taking advantage more than a little....

I am actually have the same coolant leak problem.

I have no clue where my coolant is going. Its not going into the oil (thank God) and I only see it on the ground every now and then.

It is more anoying than anything.

since day one I have leaked coolant not below a certain point, first it was the upper radiator hose getting torn up by my alternator pulley ( that was the first day i had the car). Then it was a front timing cover gasket recall. And for the past year I haven't been able to find it and have given up. I fill it ocasionally. Never found it on the ground. It's like someone is stealing a little prestone from me everyday.
