First, you have a 4.6L, not a 4.8L :p

And how many miles does it have? My 4.6L burns oil as well. Its probably worn valve seals (right?) but it seems it's semi-common for 4.6's burn oil.

I know... Long story behind that one. ;)

It has 175k. It does burn oil, but what can I do about it?

Worn valve seals? I know nothing about engines... well, next to nothing. I'm learning more about cars with this beast. You'll have to talk to me like a six year old. What are valve seals?

valve seals prevent oil from seeping past the valvestems in the cylinder head. Your valve seals are worn and are allowing to seep or blow past them and into the combustion chamber...you are thereby burning oil. You can run a 10W-40 motor oil or just monitor the oil consumption. As long as the oil level is maintained, the car will be pretty much fine. Now, go fil up your sippy cup with some juicy juice, eat some oatmeal cookies, and take a nap after Sesame Street is over.

The Great Obucina is right i would start by checking the valve seals. or just say screw it and keep a quart of oil with you 24/7 in the car

Haha, very funny. Thanks for the explanation. BTW- I never watched Sesame Street, it was Barney all the way! As for the oil, I check it every time I get gas and use a quart every week. I'd like to fix the problem, not just cope with it. How much are seals? How much work is required in replacing them?

run 10W-40 weight motor oil. Changing the seals is extremely labor intensive, a typical shop would change about four figures to do it, provided they have the OTC spec valvespring compressor.

Just for the record, Barney sucks, Big Bird could kick his fagtacular purple ass any day of the week, with The Count laughing in the background.

do an oil change and use 4 quarts of 10 40 like these guys were saying and try some lucas oil (comes in a large cone shaped bottle, every parts store has it). the lucas stuff is very thick, like honey. i had this same problem and it seems to have solved it atleast temperarily.

fixing the valve seals is not cheap. i looked in the shop book that i kept from the shop i owned and the labor time and expense chart made me blow beer out of my nose. ur better off snagging a slightly used motor out of a wrecked car with a 4.6 and dropping it in urself kinda expensive.

What the **** is wrong with it?
Does it smoke more on cold starts and disipate as it warms up? Or is it consistent while it running? If it's just on start up then it's valve seals, if it's consistent smoking while running then it's piston rings. It could be both as well.

I'm still curious, how much labor is required? Could I pull this off with myself and one of my car savvy friends? Would the car be out of it for hours, days, weeks?

its something like a 7-8 hour job on the books with the correct tools. The valvecovers have to come and you would be best of removing the heads. Its something I would NOT recommend you do.
