97 Xr7 Started overheating last night. Normally, it takes a few minutes to get to the R in Norm, and this was no exception. Had just put oil and water into it so I figured the fluids would be fine. then, climbing the hill home, the Water light came on and the heat started rising. I pulled off at the next ramp and topped off the water. Back on the highway, the temp ran right up to the M and started creeping up. I pulled over at the next ramp and as I idled, the temp went down to M again. I decided to risk the next ramp, and made it the three exits home, but not without the red light coming on and the engine giving a funny smell.

Water not too hot. when I checked. Oil was low so I added a quart, but temp sprang right up again and crept into overheating.

At this point, I want to poke around with the Haynes manual, but my current suspicion is the oil pump, a job I'm not excited to attempt. Any other ideas?

Background: never had heat in this vehicle, so not sure if heater is coming on at right temp. Gonna check to see if the fan is coming on, and look for the thermostat, and water pump belt(?).

If you just put oil in and overheated and were still low on oil you could have a major engine problem from low oil. Otherwise, sticky thermostat, coolant temperature sensors could be going haywire.

It's always good to be able to read your error codes. That's another place to start.

Where's the oil and water going? On the road via leaks or out the tailpipe?

The water seems to be dripping from the front drivers side. I'm thinking there might be a crack in the reserve tank, haven't investigated as it's only about a 1/2 gal every 100 miles.

I'm not seeing the oil leaking anymore. Not sure where it's going. My only guess is that I have been getting consistent coded for the oxygen sensor.

That's a good point, though, I'm to plug in the OED reader.

Okay, tossed on the obdII dongal, checked the codes. The oxygen sensors weren't registering. but I did have 2 codes in there:
P0430 Catalyst system below threshhold bank 2
P0174 System too lean bank 2

Temp gauge pegged at 0 until engine hit 210 and then it popped up between O and R in norm.

Found the oil leak, up front.

Oh, also, there was a terrible squeak as though the belt were slipping until she warmed up. Then it faded and stopped.

Losing a half gallon of coolant every 100 miles would classify as a pretty serious leak. The oil pump is not the source of the elevated coolant temperature. The noise in the FEAD is likely either the idler or tensioner pulley bearing.

Oil filter adapter is leaking? Okay
Yeah, I was thinking about lubing the bearings in all those parts.

Okay, so I put a LOT of water in her today, made sure the oils was topped up (even added tranny fluid).
She stayed cool a lot longer, but once up to norm heat, she started the creep up again. No high speeds all below 50.
