Here I am. I've been looking for a V-8 T'bird or SC since October. Getting a feel for the market and understanding certain inherent problem areas to look for. So now that the money is coming down in 4-6 weeks I have four that I like but now I can't decide. Here are the choices. Maybe you guys can help.

#1 - 1989 Mercury Cougar XR7 - SC with the 5-speed. Its white with a grey interior and a small surface rust on the back of the rockers. Its about the size of a half dollar. Brand new tires, good clutch, trans is good, but 200,000 mi. Wants $800 and seems very Negotiable. Lives in Ohio about 3 1/2 hours away.

#2 - 1990 Ford T'bird SC - trans unknown as well as mileage. Its titanium with grey interior. Picture doesn't show any rust, and they want $1200 for it. But I haven't been able to get ahold of anyone as of today.

#3 - 1994 Ford T'bird 4.6L - Its silver with grey interior. No noticable rust. The owner swears by the car and says it VERY dependable. It has 164,000 mi. and is an auto. The rear upper bushings were replaced and he uses synthetic trans fluid and does oil changes every 3000. This car is in NY and he wants $1000 firm for it.

#4 - 1990 Ford T'bird SC - Its black with black interior. Needs repainted (clear coat peeling). 5-speed with minor mechanical problems. I couldn't drive it home from NJ. They want $1600 for it.

Personally I like the V-8 and for my toy (which this car is going to be), I would perfer a 5-speed. I like a car that handles and I'm not going to drag race it much. But these are such good deals. So I'm looking for some help deciding and narrowing the field. Please give your reasons along with a choice and feel free to ask me questions. I'll be on here on and off all day. Thanks.

Since you like the V8, for the 94, check the upper ball joints for wear/torn boots, and see if the trans. was replaced already or not. The 94-95 trans. is known to be crappy. If not, see if you can talk him down a bit, since those 2 items can be kinda costly (espec. if you don't do the work yourself).

here's my order and why:

#4 '90 SC --needs work, well they all do, and it's black on black! i'd offer 1200 for it. why can't you drive it home? where in jersey is it? if it's close to me i can go check it out for you.

#2 '90 SC- -but need more info on it

#1 XR7 - -sounds good other then the rust and miles.

#3 4.6 bird -- this sounds like the most realiable of the 4, but is the slowest, plus it's got a ****y trans and crapy motor. but imo hte price is right.

after having a 89 s/c , unless its in perfect mechanical condition , PASS .the xr7 is a odd car and worth buying if you dont mind the s/c headaches. and as tomaso said the 94-95 trannys suck . but sounds like your best deal . OR you coudl buy the xr7 and swap a 5.0 into it. ( but have a donor car lined up . )

Well then do you guys think it would be worth it to buy the V-8 and do a 5-speed swap. That would probably be a couple thousand to do.

Tomaso12,
Yeah, car #4 needs brakes and the pressure side PS hose. Its in NJ and on SCCOA, Randall Burdetts car. But he sounds pretty firm on the price.

Oh and I'm going to check out the XR7 tomorrow and I'm leaning toward this one. Or car number 2. Just on convinence. I guess in my head if I were to rate them right now it would be the order I have them listed.

In order to do the 5speed swap it can be a real PITA!.....

Having owned 2 SC's of the era of the ones that you are looking at......Go for the SC's!

For handling....you can't beat the SC. Yes the V8 has potential, but you can automatically boost the HP of the SC just by opening up the exhaust....to the tune of 20-30 HP in many cases. The big reason that Ford decided to keep the SC underpowered was so that it didn't blow the Mustang out of the water. For a 3500 pound sled.....the SC does VERY well! Car and Driver likened it to a BMW for handling in 1990.

Just my $.02 but I'm a bit biased.

SC is wayyy more fun altough the 94 have nicer interior, but the SC outhandles outbrakes and outaccelerates the v8 , besides is a more unique car, and there are LOTS of projects for the SC going on from M112 swaps new m90 ports whipples to turbo projects.

Thanks guys. Yeah I'm starting to see the benefits. This is why I ask. It ends the confusion. I bet the weight distribution is better on the SC too.

302 is lighter than a 3.8 s/c . and i like the sound of a v8 than any 6 s/c or not

I guess I can see the point about the weight. All the extra Supercharger items can add alot of weight. But the sound of the V-8's are really nice. This car is going to be my toy and I think performance and durability are key. Looks come next with comfort dead last. In my opinion the V-8's are more durable although they dont make the power in stock form. But I'm sure its cheaper to make more power out of a SC. But how long do they last with that much power flowing through them? I know you can make more power with a V-8 overall. Granted you will spend more but it'll last longer.

Oh and today was really messed up so I'm not able to make it out to see the Cougar. This sucks!
