I have a 96 Cougar 3.8 with aod tranny my problem is when I push the pedal down to shift into passing gear it seems to hesitate a couple of seconds then it will engage rather hard can this be fixed by some sort of cable adjustment?

The 96 cougar has a 4r70w not an AOD, I doubt any adjusting of a cable is going to help that hesitation. If it bogs it may be wise to do a voltage sweep and check of the tps and clean the maf.

You have a 4R70W electronically controlled transmission, not an AOD.

First things first, how is the fluid? Fresh Mercon V, a new filter and the J-mod would be good places to start. And as Chris said, search for threads on testing the TPS.

Fixed the problem Saturday morning it was a cable connected to the throttle body had a lot of slack in it, took the slack out and it shifts fine now.

First we had a mongrel 94, now this.

Would you please take a pic of that linkage setup on the throttle body?
