Hey guy have you seen the PI heads on Seanhylandmotorsports.com? It says they are $359 with valvetrain and cams. This seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. For both heads and a PI intake it would be $999. Would this be about a 40-50 rwhp gain? I was thinking of getting some 17x8 Bullit Chrome wheels, but I may do this instead. What do you guys think?

I believe most are picking up all aluminum 4.6L Explorer engines for $1000.00 - $1200.00. Pappy started a thread on a source for take-out P.I. blocks & cylinder heads. PI Long Blocks
I did the head swap June '03. See my signature for dyno numbers.

If you want new cylinder heads buy some Raffle Tickets and/or contact

Good deal, I can't decide what to do first though, I really want to get some 17' wheels, 13' brakes, and F&R STB's. But in time it will all be done.

You've already got the exhaust and headers done. Get the motor taken care of. You only see your wheels when you're walking to/away from the car. You feel the extra power every time you put down the pedal!

Would it be wiser to just go with PI cams and Intake or are the worth quite a bit of hp and tq? I would rather get my NPI's PnP'ed but I don't have enough money.

So the heads would make no difference at all as compared to my stock NPI's?

No, you'll pick up some power if you swap the heads. But not a lot more than doing just the cams and intake, which requires a lot less effort.

Maybe I should just do cams/intake, and spend the rest of the money on a gear swap instead of heads.

Ok, I am not very smart in this catagory, But I have been researching the exact thing...PI intake on NPI heads...The ports don't match up so you run into a slight meshing problem. Also, the PI heads out flow the NPI's (Unless the NPI's are P&Ped). They also give your compression a bumb. I was gonna install a PI intake on my NPI heads, but have decided to just get PI everything (Heads, cams, etc.) I already have everything needed to convert to PI, just need to heads now. Depending on cash outlook, I will have the entire swap done (Heads and all) within' a month or so...If not, I may just throw the PI intake on and grind the NPI heads to port match them...Will keep you posted :D

How much other stuff besides the heads/cams and intake do you need to do the swap on a 97?

1. with regards to SHMS; If ya shake hands with him, be certain to count your fingers afterwards, ya never know... J,Miller bought a supposedly new motor from him... it was a prototype NG engine which had rocks in the cyls! this was probably something he dug outa a Ford dumpster, as those engines were not supposed to be resold... I also got a 5.4 from them, and of course i had no Idea that it was a prototype engine untill I saw the ptotitype markings on the N.G. fuel rail and throttle body... by then it was too late to take exception, and I was well and truly snookered ...
2. NPI heads when P&P,d will equal or exceed the PI flow, add sum Comp 268 grind cams and behive springs , and you have something!
3. If ya gotta get PI heads, get em from Dan, then you know what you have, instead of getting "purported to be''
good luck

Thanks man, I now know that I'll be buying from Dan. How much do you think a pnp'ed job and 268 Comp Cams with Valve Springs would cost me?

price is variable.... i spent more on the cams and springs than JL could get them for, but thats 'cause my friend gives me run of his shop, and will drop everything on a Saturday afternoon to drive 75 miles, and help me,no charge with something my hands are too big for, and dont have the expertese to do... so i buy there , and spend a few bucks extra as he is a small operator, and doesnt get volume discounts, but in your case , PM JL as to where / what to do ... his advice will be the best..
