I've attempted to clean the carbon from my engine with the Motorcraft PM-2 cleaner...three cans worth. I'm not sure if it has made any difference.

I've suspected for quite a while that my problem wasn't all because of carbon, but I'm not sure what it is, or how to fix it. Let's assume for a minute that it isn't due to carbon build up.

When the engine is cold....I can nail it and there is no problem with ping whatsoever. When normal operating temperature is reached (N on Normal in temp gage) the ping is bad under load starting about 3K RPM up to 5K+.

This is a stock 1996 4.6 with no modifications. Higher octane gas (89-93) helps somewhat but the noise is still there.

Any ideas what it could be and how to fix it? Is there any way I can check for excessive carbon buildup without tearing down the engine?

I hate to say this as it gets said a lot, but try cleaning your MAF.

When mine has a dirty MAF it pings pretty badly. Do a search on clean MAF and you'll find many posts about how to clean it.

Also, you might try having the injectors professionally cleaned (fuel system is disabled and the car is run on a cleaning solution).

Some 'birds just seem prone to detonation more than others.....

I think the first thing I'd do is switch to colder plugs like AWSFA-12C's and
see if that helps...make sure your wires are in good shape also.....if that
doesn't help...pull your octane plug and see if the 3* of retard works......

you also have the option of getting a fordchip with more conservative
timing and the ability to properly use a 180* thermostat which in theory
could also help reduce your ping.....is your 'Bird running at a proper temp
or is it running a bit on the hot side?

DD94...

I didn't know that this could cause a ping....I've been meaning to do it, but I can't find my dremel tool to remove the dimple in the tamper-proof torx screw. I'll certainly look harder to eliminate this as a possible cause.

Thanks for the number on the cooler plugs. I thought this might make a difference, but hadn't got around to search for the number. I'm stopping at the Ford dealer tonight to pick up the rest of my J-mod parts so I'll get the plugs also.

What would the 180 Tstat do without the chip? This car had one in it, but I replaced it with an OEM temp because I didn't think it was doing any good. Lots of temp gage fluctuations with it. As I said in the original post....the temp gage reads at the "N" in normal when fully warm. Same place my 95 Cougar runs when warm.

Oh yeah, Mager......do the initals SR-71 mean anything to you????:D

Changing to those plugs has made a noticable improvement for some people......

Running a 180* tstat with oem EEC programming may cause problems with the
computer not taking you from "Closed Loop" to Open Loop" operation......

with the "wrong" tstat the fan's not coordinated with the EEC as to when they it
should kick in, as it's programmed for the oem cut-on cut-off range.
Going to a "good" chip and 180* tstat may allow the engine to run
a bit cooler which, with respect to detonation, is a good thing....


And, yes they do.......SR-71 = Habu ;)

Why not just purchase the torx bit? You can buy them at just about any auto parts store (NAPA for example).

As for your pinging...I think everything has been covered above. Clean that MAF, switch to colder plugs. Try throwing in one of those 'injector cleaner' additives into your gas tank next time you fill up (put it in right before you fill the tank so it mixes with the gasoline). Maybe it'll help...maybe not. Maybe install a clean fuel filter as well....

As for the in-the-tank injector cleaner....if the 3 cans of Motorcraft PM-2 (that I mentioned in my initial post) didn't do the trick...I doubt any fuel additive will.

The in tank injector cleaner is different than the carbon cleaner. The in tank injector cleaner is something you can get at a gas station or your favorite auto parts place. As I said before, you pour it in and it mixes with your gas.

It's designed to clean your fuel injectors, not clean carbon. The carbon cleaner removes carbon from the tops of the piston. This is why I suggested trying a bottle (gumout, STP just to name a few brands). Give it a shot, it cannot hurt. Might not fix the problem...but they're like $1.59 a bottle....

And yes, Mager does fly a blackbird...really, really low flying SR-71. :D

I can't seem to get the cooler plugs locally. Ford dealer only has 2 of the AWSFA-12C plugs. Nobody carries the Autolite 763, but the Car Quest store cross referenced to an NGK 4177. Anybody have any experience with these plugs? I've used nothing but NGK's in my 2 cycle ultralight with no problems. What do y'all think?

My local dealer got me the AGSF-12FM1 plugs from the Lightning. These have the fine wire platinum electrode and have absolutely resolved my pinging problem I had post headswap.
