Stock 4.6 motor other than no cats, runs perfect other than it pings only above about 4000 RPM running on 87 octane. What options do I have other than paying buku for high test? Don't really want to go the high test route as this thing is drinking ~5 tanks of gas a month at the moment. Doesn't ping at all any other time.

I cleaned my MAF and got rid of 95% of my pinging. I switched to coulder plugs to help also but, I haven't driven the car yet to see if that helped more.

Clean the MAF wire - there is a post floating around here with details. You will need a tamper proof bit to remove the wire. That will fix the WOT pinging, no need to run colder plugs.
