Ok, well I haven't been on here for long and I haven't posted much. However, I have a 97 Bird 4.6 AED S/C. My ECU died on me and while it was it was dumping fuel and the car was running extremely rich. Going down the road the car looked like a diesel truck..... lol Anyways I have gotten a new ECU and waiting on a tune from Don Lasato but the car is my daily and I noticed it has started to overheat. I changed the thermostat thinking it could be sticking and it's still overheating. Everything else fine no blown head gasket or anything, fan is working, etc. So my question is could my cats been plugged from it running that rich and causing it to overheat?

If your cats were so clogged your car wouldnt even run. Happened to me. I had to gut them out, The car would not go pass 1500rpm and die. As far as overheating, I dont think so. Clogged cats would have excessive back pressure causing the engine to choke and shut off.

They could be partially clogged and are probably pretty well contaminated from the fuel dumping. I'm not sure if that's causing your overheating issue, but it's probably a good idea to replace them.

Like mentioned, I think you would notice the power being down excessively for the cats to be clogged. I would keep looking at the cooling system. Is it losing coolant?

I would throw a can of Seafoam in the tank and intake tube, which "might" help clear out the cats. I would make 110% sure the cats are clogged before replacing them. Factory cats last 300k+ miles and are made from superior materials, that's why they cost so much. Aftermarket cats are made from inferior materials, that's why they cost so little. In other words, don't be surprised if they need replaced again in a few years.

What does the exhaust smell like? Different?

Like I've posted before; pull the front o2 sensors, and crank it up.

Don't drive it, just rev it.

If it blows several pounds of fine carbon dust everywhere;

Hey, your Cat's are Clogged!!

:)

Don't drive it without the o2s, it will likely break if you do.
Best case, it goes into "limp home mode"; 2nd gear, no power.
