Porting, Polishing, 3 way Valve Job ???????

1859 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  AverageJoe
Ok, I want to have my heads sent in to be Ported, Polished, and have a 3 way valve job done. How much Horsepower will it be able to handle? I don't really want to spend 1300 bucks on PI Heads, so I thought this would be the next best step. Any information would be great! Thanks!

well...

Pi heads for everything you replace will be about $1500 in a 96-97. To get a good P&P your talking about the same price. And when you got the heads off you will want to replace things like timing chains and all that other good stuff. Im not sure but they say to get a better TB for PI heads cuz they flow better so plan on doing that. Better MAF too. You will still need all the gaskets and stuff. The PI's with intake and valve cover will be cheap if you get some used ones. I picked up valve covers for $25. You can get a 99-02 intake everyday for under $100. So either way might cost you about the same. But there are the advantages of staying with the P&P stock heads. like not raising the compression ratio so you can go juiced or blown later on.

Now that I told you more then you needed to know I will stop.

Good Luck.

Thought you all might be interested to know....

I called Fox Lake Power Products and talked to
one of the P&P boys in the back...
the boss was out setting up a Dyno test, and
this guy told me they offer Stage I head work
that costs $599.00 labor only, no parts.

They have a Stage II level of mods that cost
$900.00, labor only, no parts. I don't remember
the EXACT figures, but the Stage II's out flow the
Stage ones by ABOUT 10%. Please, that figure is
approximate, not exact.

The guy I talked to didn't know much about cam
differences or the advantages of PI vs non-PI heads.

I posted this for one reason and one reason only....
for those of you wanting to build a strong "street"
motor - getting a decent set of heads may not be
quite as atmospherically expensive as you might have
thought - as long as you stay away from things like
titanium exotics, etc.

If you want to get the REAL scoop call Ron at Fox Lake...
he's SUPPOSED be back in the office on Friday.

And finally....maybe those that have had work done by
Fox Lake already, would be willing to share some of their
parts and cost decisions, etc with the rest of the
board........
:p

I hope this might be helpful to someone,

The ultimate head job (hehehe) runs around $2100. This is porting, polishing, valve job, SS valves, stiffer valve springs and everything involved and add another $800 for cams. This is a CNC porting also. This is from a place in Michigan that builds some very kick ass motors.

For regular p&p I would definatly go with Fox Lake...I spoke with Ron before a few times and he's a very good guy.
lol

I do like head jobs... for our cars. (what, did you think i was gonna say something else?) I just want my stock parts to actually be able to make atleast 300hp (at the crank) Gotta be a way of doing it for under 400 bucks. Or I could go steal some PI's =P (grabs wire cutters, and tool-box) lol heh heh heh
Don't know much

I dont know much about them....just found them when i was looking along the internet...

If i had the money, i would consider getting some PI or already P&P PI heads...but i figured i'd just post it and let people figure out if it'd help them or not..

http://www.powerheads.com/

sorry if i'm not making any sense....i probably should go die for 8-9 hrs so i can wake up tomorrow...

Heh, can see the the news headlines now...
"Ford Mustang: The Headless Horses"

"There is an epedimic of unusual thefts occurring across the country. Owners of 1999 and newer Ford Mustangs have been reporting their cars being broken into, and only the engine cylinder heads and intake manifolds being stolen. No visible damage to the rest of the car, and some even had cash in them, some had cash in them that wasn't there before. Owners of some 5.4L Ford trucks and Expeditions have been having scattered reports of people breaking in and opening the hood, sometimes stealing just the heads and leaving the intakes behind. But then come the stranger occurences.

There have been a few of instances when new Mustang owners have come out to their car, expecting a high performance drive, but finding their cars to be rather sluggish. So out of general maintainence, they open the hoods of their cars to find the heads not only stolen, but swapped out completely. The heads and intakes that replaced the stolen mustang heads/intake combination have been traced through Ford records as being factory installed on many 94-97 Thunderbirds. Conincidence? Perhaps, but we'll let the shady people at www.tccoa.com explain this strange phenomena..."

wow...I sounded like a complete idiot. I was tired when I wrote it. Sorry 'bout that.

either way, I hope that it helps someone out in some way.....some how...

LOL
Aww, :( I was hoping for some more comments on my little new article snippet. I spent the better part of half an hour writing that up for you guys' enjoyment. :)
heh

I loved it joe, I think its full of wit and good stuff like that.. lol =P It would be even better if ya got me some free P&P PI heads!!!! =) jk (no, it would be badass though!) lmao =P Good job joe!
If anyone gets PI heads for free, they're mine! But if any other heads are stolen, I'll consider it. :) j/k
I thought it was a pretty humorous article. By the way there are entirly too many suv's running around here and maybe snatching a few sets of pi heads might limit them on the road.

p.s. saw a commerical on tv today about the new merc maruader,.......OMG!!! it is bad ass!
I agree about too many SUVs. Personally, I think my MN12 is safer overall than an SUV and it looks better too! That and the SUV trend is killing off all the truly good cars. Killed our MN12s (they could have just updated the styling like they did with the mustangs in 99), killed the Camaros and Firebirds, as well as some others. Anyone wish people would quit wanting SUVs?

Well considering my wife was hit by one thursday night (she was, not any of the vehicles)... Most definately, they've progressed beyond nuisance into saftey hazzard in my book.

And yes, she's fine, but her shoulder is a bit stiff. She did however ram the shopping cart along the side of the SUV for nailing her in the shoulder after cussing him out.
Heh, did she go to the hospital? I'm glad to hear she's ok and I've decided what I hate most about SUVs. People think they're the "One vehicle does all". Like that Chevy Avalanche. Whats people's obsessions with convertibility? They want something that can do everything a truck can, without it being a truck. Like the Avalanche, those ugly Explorer Sport Tracs, and so on. They demand a luxory vehicle that "can" do what a truck can, but the suspension they demand can't hold up to it. Let alone they risk getting anything onthe interior, so real hauling is out. I hate SUVs, they're popular because popular society is lazy and stupid. But thats just my opinion.
SUV's over populate the roads

I will have to say, yes, popular society is lazy and stupid. SUV's are clogging up city/highway roads. Everywhere I turn, it's me in my Tbird vs. the Denali/Yukon/explorer/durango/etc. next to me. It's a pain....especially since everyone and their mother has a cell phone and just HAVE to use it while they're driving. I have a cell phone, but use a hands free device when I need to call or receive a call from someone.

Here's the one that REALLY pisses me off...

Who can afford SUV's? For the most part, it's the upper echilon (sorry if i mispelled it) of society. Those that can afford really expensive stuff must flaunt it off. Personally, if i had mad cash, i would be purchasing a cobra R/Z06/SLP Fbody/Twin turbo supra....or if i was filthy rich, a ferarri 360 Modena. But since most people cant afford the good stuff (ferarri) or have real taste (fbody, Mustang, corvette), they settle for what is 'in' - the SUV. Now, dont get me wrong. There are SOME people that DO need an SUV. If you have a litter of children, or are a soccer mom/dad...an SUV would be useful. Or if you were some kind of rancher or something like that and needed a large vehicle (like a Suburban), then you would actually USE the vehicle for what it was built. but for the most part, people who buy SUV's buy one because they CAN and because it's IN. How many times have you looked at the SUV next to you and seen only ONE person inside? Honestly? Does ONE person REALLY need to use such a huge vehicle to go and get some coffee from Starbucks? Do they really need to get 10 miles to the gallon to go to Burger King to pick up dinner for the wife/husband and kids?

Speaking of crap gas mileage... this one takes the cake. Who complains about high gas prices...EVERYONE. Who complains about the earth being ruined by car exhaust and by using fossil fuels: Hippies and tree huggers....greenpeace....the Sierra Club ...some scientists (but they're exempt in this rant). Excluding some of the smaller, grass roots organizations to save the earth (which we all should in some way anyway), the people that ***** the most are the Sierra club (sorry, i'm in the south west, i hear a lot about them). However, there are a LOT of RICH PEOPLE that are in the Sierra Club. and what do they all drive? YOU GUESSED IT, AN SUV.

I guess their message is: It's great for me, but bad for everyone else.

As for the Sport Utility Truck craze...I dont understand it. Doesnt having an SUT (Avalanche, Escalade EXT) or an Explorer Sport-Trac (which has a bed equivalent of a small ranger truck, maybe smaller, yet costs more than a decently optioned F150) just make things MORE difficult? I mean, you cant fit anything large in the back of an Explorer S-T. The whole SUV to Truck conversion just asks for trouble....more moving/removable parts = more chances for something to break or get a leak.

Alright...i guess i'm done ranting and raving. Hopefully i havent offended anyone. maybe i gave you guys/girls a laugh. :D

I'll stick with my MN-12. Sure, i cant fold down my back window and seats to fit a chair or a large plank of wood, but it's comfortable, gets HELLA BETTER gas mileage, and looks infinitely better.

Shadow Dragon: I hope your wife is doing alright. I woulda gone balistic. Shoulda got some info, called the cops. Can you sue for injury?

I appologize about how long this was...

Take care everyone!

Man, get off my brainwave! We're thinkin too much alike! :)

I think the Sierra Club's real message is "quit using so much damn gas because there's not enough for me to feed this gas guzzling SUV I cant even fully use".

If i want family room/cargo room, I'll go snag me a MUCH cheaper and safer 84 Suburban with the Sherman Tank package ;) or a nice F-150 Crew Cab. Double cab and a true truck bed, what more could you ask for? And I like the F-150 interiors better anyways. :)
