I am asking this because my friend took the TC's turbocharger and put it on a 2.3L engine and slapped all of this into a beat up Ford Ranger, according to the guage, he was pushing an incredible 20 lbs of boost!!

Does the TC push similar numbers??

which turbo is it??? the 87-88s use the IHI which i think was 10-14 stock psi but 18psi is max on that turbo because its so small

on a 83-86 it was a T3 with 10psi stock but safely run 21-22psi max

may wanna double check my info cuz im fairly new to the TC and turbo game

The boost is based on the wastegate, which uses a pulsed signal from the EEC to bleed off the exhaust from the turbine.

There is a metered orifice in the boost line that feeds the wastegate actuator and the EEC sends a pulsed signal to engage the wastegate solenoid, which will bleed off some of that pressure. The EEC regulated the pulses to maintain the boost. The wastegate is nothing more than a diaphram that moves the valve in the turbocharger turbine housing to bleed off exhaust gasses which slows down the compressor.

On my 85 TC, I changed the complete wastegate system to provide 10 psi below 3K, 15 psi from 4500, and 20 psi above. All that was using rpm activated switches and stock wastegate solenoids. The OEM setting is 8 psi at some rpm and then 14 psi above that (don't quote me on those exact numbers since I'm pulling this from memory)

It’s a pretty neat system.

all i can get from my 85 TC is 10psi....on ocasion its gone up to 14 but im not sure why.

the swap should be farely easy if you have the experience...its been done plenty and the stang came with the motors for a while to....might even be farely similar to the NA 4cyl stangs(mounting positions and such)

Mine will only go up to 10 at max, but thats just driving around the yard, Its got no brakes at all. Kinda the reason im gonna drop it in the stang.

You are correct in that fact that the wastegate controls that amount of boost that the turbo will produce however it is not controled by the EEC unless he is using the stock Boost Control Selenoid (BCS). If the BCS is connected and functioning properly the boost will be set at 10psi of boost for an Auto or 15psi for a Manual and this is controled by the EEC. The waste gate on the IHI turbos is set at 4psi not sure about the t-3's wastegate. The BCS has a big role, you can always use a manual boost controller. If he has a vaccum hose connected straight to the wastegate it will keep the wastegate closed and he can make as much boost as he wants . The IHI will continue to make boost even past its efficent range of 17-18psi. Right now my IHI is pushing 18psi with the stock intercooler. The only thing problem i can think of with running that much boost is detonation, :leftright: In a TC its bad but in a hyperpathetic block its catastophic. :boom: Hopefully he swapped the entire engine. So basically they can all make 20+psi of boost but whether or not they are efficent is a different story.

I'm not really sure which turbo was in it, but the guage was reading around 18 to 20 lbs of boost, and you sure could hear it!!!!

You think that little truck would be any fast?

It is a 83 Ranger with a rebuilt 2.3L and TC turbo, and he has a Flowmaster exhaust system on it.

Factory boost guages suck, upgrade and you will find out what it is really doing.

you might want to tell him to dump the flowmasters and go with some kind of straight thru design muffler like dynomax

Well, as of right now he is going to get it repainted, then he wants to lower it and put aftermarket wheels and do some custom interior work to it. It will look really neat when he is done... I told him to go magnaflow because there isn't any BS in the muffler like Flowmaster, but he said his Flowmaster didn't use that Delta flow technology.

This vehicle is like his "fishing" truck, it is the only time he uses it. His daily is a 97 C5 with around 370 to 400 RWHP. That thing is sick too .

He also has a SVO stang with upgraded turbo.. I want him to let me drive that sooo bad.

Guys... What do you want to bet that his wastegate has no boost referance going to it? ;)

Jim
You're probably right... I had '88 XR4TI that would make 24lbs because the wastegate actuator had a bad diaphram...
