I've heard you can use ATF in place of power steering fluid. Is there any advantage of one over the other?
Thanks

Well, the story was, was that the T-Birds left the factory with transmission fluid in them - for the power steering.

I flushed my old fluid out and added some Mercon V to mine.

Never had any problems.

Yeah you can put ATF in and it will be fine. No real advantages as far as I know. I usually just stick with whatever is already in there. If it has ATF, I put ATF. If it has regular PS fluid, I put that in.

Thanks to all. I'm changing out the pump this weekend & was wondering which fluid to buy. I'll stick with the PS fluid
