A friend and I were discussing the other day racing techniques when we can around to loading the torque converter at the line. I find myself always maxing my converter out at 2k rpm however my friend with a 2800 stall says that the car has better response at a pre load of about half or so. Is there any evidence which is the best way to pre-load a converter? Is max stall best or half stall?

The rule I have made that seems to work is the smaller converter the more you want to preload it. 12 inch converters, flash them off idle. 11 inch converters, flash them by holding th emotor just off idle. 10 inch converters like half load and 9.5-9 inch converters hold them for all they are worth.

I can't tell you how many times I have watched your launch videos....just amazing...and the 90-95-100 MPH perfect speedo/tach needle synchro is just beutiful.

I like the rule. Ok so I am clear on this, the Mark VIII converter that is in my car is a 10 inch correct? So I should hold it at about 1000 rpm for the best pre-load launch. Is the Marauder also a 10 inch? I recently pick one up to go with my PI Teksid set up.

I think the car wants more stall at the line. :cool:

For the record, that was the finals of the bracket series for the day and the Blue Flame victoriously pulled into the pits with a flat tire after that final run. :D

MarkVIII and marauder converters are 11.25 inch.

I see, I thought the Tbird had an 11inch and the Mark had a 10 inch but I see I was wrong. What would you recommend an 11 inch or a 10?

That is the real question, the people replying in this thread are going to suggest much more than you probably even imagined, myself included.

Well I was thinking of like a 3000 stall. I don't see too much of a reason to go above that. I would like my car to 60ft at around 1.6 or 1.7

You'll need 3,800 stall, very sticky tires and a lot of HP to do that; my 60's are 1.6 and 1.7

Stall alone won't get you to 1.6 or 1.7

yup...high stall converters and cheap wal-mart tires dont mix...unless your going for smoke instead of speed

I know a stall alone wont get me that 60 ft. I have a set of gears for it (4.56's) and will be ordering the driveshaft best suited for the gears. When the car is running I was planning on running MT ET streets to hold down the power of the PI teksid. I am hopping to see in the area of 400whp with a 100 wet shot, but thats just hopes. :zdunno:

If you are running 1.6/1.7's then perhaps I should set my standards lower. The best I 60 ft before in the T-bird was 2.19 on street tires.

So you want to run 4.56 gears and a 3000 stall converter. I would think that through. 3.27 gears or 3.55's would be a closer mate to a 3000 stall. For 4.56 gears I would be suggesting 4600ish.

May I ask why? This is a new concept to me so please help me understand.

Because you have to mate the components together to work correctly. For example if you put a 4200 stall in a car with 3.08 gears it will be slipping and making heat any time it is not being run wide open or locked up. The rpms will be below the converters range.
Going the other way isn't going to make those problems but it will not optimize performance. 4.56 gears in an 8.8 scare me with the small pinion anyway. The stall will never produce the results you want doing it that way.

so alan with my 9.5 inch torque converter I should hold it as tight as I can to get the best launch? I normaly hold it to about 1400 and then punch it. 3150 stall.
