So, I have the next chapter in my silly saga now sitting in my garage. It is amazing how easy stuff becomes once you do it often enough. I had to go pick it up today and it didn't have any wheels, knuckles/spindles or suspension. We added enough to get it up on the trailer to get it home and I have all of those items back off and I also have the rear subframe and suspension removed.

I'll try to take pictures as I go. I will pretty much have to transfer everything I have from the old wrecked car as well as I'll have to install brand new stuff like brake lines (ALL brake lines) and fuel lines. I'll even need to transfer all electrical components. It's going to be a lot of work.

It's been hiding in a garage since 2012 apparently. I will literally have to take care of almost every single system in the car to get it going again. It doesn't even have any viable brake lines or any braking system. There is no wiring to speak of. There is a lot to do.

On a side note, since I have a plasma cutter now, I'm thinking of taking care of a few things. Since the car has a full cage, there are some items that I really want to remove. The first is a panel to access the fuel pump. The second is the spare tire well.

Any thoughts on removing the spare tire well?

It never seemed worth the effort to me, unless you were putting a fuel cell in its place. You won’t be saving much weight, and even what you do save is being taken from the worst possible place as far as trying to keep your weight distribution as even as possible. I also am not a fan of the access panel for the fuel pump. If you put a good fuel pump in, you should never have to mess with it again, and even if you do, you can get the pump in and out by just lowering the tank some, you don’t even have to disconnect the filler pipe or anything, so I would rather just do that.

LOL that's for sure. Good luck on the project, it looks like a fun fresh start.

Ive always been hesitant to take a plasma to these cars, so much undercoating, seam sealer and grease that it catches on fire quickly. >:)

Did it come with a second set of doors? I was looking at pictures of that car in its heyday and it had the frames lopped off above the side mirrors with the window assemblies gutted out. Those doors are obviously in tact :)

I mentioned this to you in IRC, but until you resurrected your bird in earnest a few years ago I had always thought the original bird in your avatar was silver. The effect of the white hood on the beige body in such a low res form I guess. So you snapping up a silver car seems very meant to be, doubly so finding a shell with a road racing history.


I second Mike on the pump hole and tire well :tongue:

I think that if there were to be a street driven car then I would totally agree. Since it's just for track use and I really hate to drop the exhaust to drop the tank it's something I really want to do just to get it out of the way. It's a major pain to go back and do it so I figure I'm going to get it out of the way.

The spare tire well is a similar scenario. <b>IF</b> I ever plan to do a fuel cell, it's just one more thing that's out of the way that I don't have to do a bunch of disassembly to other parts to get it done. Again, the car is stripped so now is really the time to knock out some of these things.

This car is the infamous Mansier car so it's pretty much (I said pretty much) stripped of most of those inconvenient things.

He did have a second set of doors. He wanted to keep the skins for sentimental value and since they were just too bare bones for my taste I was all for it. There is actually a lot of sentimental value in this car for the former owner. I'll do my best to make it work well. Yeah, a silver bird really does seem meant to be based on how much I came to hate the color of our original bird.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know both of your position on that. :grin2:

Things on the disassembly side for the donor are happening quickly. Other than the stumble on having an almost full gas tank to drain, the rest of it went pretty fast. Dropping the entire rear end out in one piece was very nice. I'll have some parts to sell for sure.

Hey that one looks alot like my 92 SC. I wonder what engine you'll put in that one. I dont know how you can take the car apart that fast, thats amazing!

It's a 92 SC so if yours is silver then they are definitely twins. In fairness the starting point for me wasn't too far from that. The car was set up for racing so it was pretty stripped down.

Progress is being made on the effort. I got to use the new plasma cutter on the old car last night since my plan is to remove the entire core support so that I can remove it from the old car for future purpose. I also removed the passenger door from the old car since I want easier access to work inside it.

The family joined in on cleaning up the "new" one. It had a lot of stickers on it and the doors were pretty filthy from where they were being stored. It's cleaning up pretty nice.

I remember the build on that car back on the SCCOA - that was about 10 years ago now. Always wondered what happened to that car and now I know.

That's what I felt like when I redid the vapor canister lines, lol.

You know, even with that much stuff off, the front swaybar Still looks like a pain to swap...

I've cut the spare tire well... with an angle grinder.
- It makes exhaust routing easier and there's a lot more room to access the pumpkin but since i replaced some aluminum cutter flashing with a single thin steel sheet that I screwed down, I suspect weight savings would be pretty minimal (definitely <10LB).
- NVH obviously increases. You'll smell more exhaust too while idling or not at speed.


In your situation, I'd probably leave it UNLESS you always found that area cramped to work in OR decide to install a fuel cell.

Having more metal back there to deform in case you get rear ended is nice, too. More energy would get absorbed there instead of in your frame rails OR (worst case scenario) your cage's rear stays.

If you don't need it, cut it out (or back to the main chassis plug) before swapping it over to the new chassis.
It's easier as you pull the harness out than when the harness is still on the car and the dash plug is up in the dash.

Since you still have the harness on the donor car, it doesn't take much thinking. Just find an endpoint connector (like the dome light or say the rear speakers), and trace the wires back to another connector. Cut it there.
Once you've done that, you may find that you have some connectors that have no wires going to it. Trace THOSE back to the power junction box or circular harness plug or whatever and cut them off at the plug.

If you really want to get OCD, I saved all of my wires (and coiled the up) for future wiring projects. This has come in handy as I now have plenty of different colored wire in 12" to several feet lengths.
