Alright, I've been putting very much a lot of serious thought into this one, and want to know if anyone has any experience with it, and what EXACTLY I am going to have to get to make it complete.

I've decided I want to get a different engine and drop it in the bird. I am having a hard time choosing between a 99+ mustang engine, or a 4.2L engine. (mainly I'm looking to have some fun with it, beef it up somewhat of course)

Which engines are going to give a better performance overall? The prices on the engines here are as follows. For the 99+ mustang engine, bout $700. For the 4.2L its about $1200. The $500.00 difference is quite a bit. I know for the 3.8 I could buy a couple of things for the price difference. Which has a better aftermarket availability?

I guess what I'm asking is which engine would be better overall, and the easiest to drop in, and bolt up to the tranny? Also, I'm pretty sure I'd need a chip to take advantage of a new engine, I just want to confirm that one.

i cant really answer your question but I wonder
have you ever thought of getting a used supercharger off of SC and getting it rebuild and keeping your engine and tranny? assuming thats possible of course and you got no isses with either

but as far as I have learned PI engine wont be a simple drop-in to a 3.8bird
dont know about 4.2L tho

5.0 does, and cheaper too. your 3.8 4r probably wont last long behind a 99+ or 4.2, so you gotta get a beefier tranny and upgrade to an 8.8 rear. i picked up a complete 95 gt engine for $500, with accessories.

im just saying...

As far as I know/have read, you can stick the supercharger on there, but on stock internals the engine wont last long.

I've thought bout the 5.Oh, but I dont have the experience/know-how to run wires for computers and everything

its easy, you just swap the eec out and hook up the harness and connect everything up. if any serious wiring needs to be done, its for an e-fan or alternator. if you get stuck, we are here to assist you.

but isnt it just easier to buy a bird w/5.0 in it, than to do an entire swap? I'd have to do rear-end, tranny, driveline, whatever. Or would I still have to look into doing those even with a swap to another 3.8 or 4.2?

Are the injector harnesses for the two extra injectors already in the engine harness in the 3.8L? :2huh:

Any V8 EFI swap will require an engine to EEC harness swap also, correct? How hard is it to pull the new harness into the car from the engine bay?

Just wondering.

sure, you can buy a bird with a 5.0 in it, or you could buy a 99+ v6 stang. sounds like you want to do some kind of swap, so i suggested a 5.0. even with a 99+ or 4.2 swap, you need to upgrade your drivetrain.

don, the 3.8 harness has six injector connections, so you need the 5.0 harness. you do need the eec and engine harness, which i believe is all connected. you run them through the firewall to where the eec is located.

paul, its a v6 out of an f150.

V8 4.2 255

~~Hello Mike

I have a 4.2 V8 from a 1981 Thunderbird, 255ci. This engine was available from 1980 to 1982 cars & trucks.

Lincoln LS has a 3.9L V8 makes more power than that 95 5.0
New Tbird's also have the 3.9L DOHC V8

But as far as deciding between a 3.8 or 4.2....it's really up to you. But if I were going to stick with a 6 cyl I'd go with I'd build an SC motor with better components, cam, port the heads and make some good power out of it. Because no matter how you look at it a non supercharged 3.8 or 4.2 is waaayyyyy too under powered for a 2 ton car. Unless you build either one for lots of spray....then it would be fun.
