My vehicle is a '94 Thunderbird SC that is getting a spare V8 Drivtrain since the motor/trans crapped out. The motor is an aluminum 4.6L PI expolorer motor with 30k miles on it and the transmission came from my '98 Mustang GT that got a 5spd swap right at 69k miles.

I'll be swapping a 96+ MN12 4R70W Oil Pan and the shifter linkage from the older SC Trans so I can connect the Thunderbird shifter. I'll also be using a Mark VIII Aluminum Driveshaft, and the Torque Converter and Flexplate from the Mustang.

Here's my questions:
-Will the tail shaft on the transmission from the mustang fit properly or will I need to use one from an MN12 4R70W?
-Will the wiring harness and computer from the SC Trans hook up to the mustang trans properly or should I re-wire the wiring harness and computer from the mustang to work in the SC?
-What else will I need to convert on the mustang trans to make it work properly? Is there any good threads covering swapping in a mustang trans???

As always thanks in advance for any helpful feedback!!

It's all covered in Jerry's thesis, (in the articles section), a good search will find the rest; you should at least be able to see my posts from the first time.

good luck with it.

Short answers are:

Same tail housing, although it may be an 8 tooth output shaft.

Yes, but the 95 eec needs the old tc solenoid. Search for which year starts the repinning requirement; it may start with 99.

The shift linkage.

Search is your friend; there's even a thread somewhere about the search syntax.

Does anybody know of a way that I could download the pdf for that 4R70W Build Up article? It seems like all my questions would be answered by that particular article I'd just love to have a printed copy that I could have next to me while I'm working on the trans, instead of running back and forth to my computer lol, any ideas?

Thanks Grog6 for the reply too, I may be messaging you for a little bit of help here and there! :D

Actually I'm still a little lost......lets see if I have this right:

In regards to proper wiring - If I wanted to use the thunderbirds wiring harness and trans computer I would just have to re-pin my thunderbird's connecter to basically mimick the wiring harness from the 98 mustang?

is that all I would need to do, or would it be more critical to switch the eniter internal wiring from the circuit board style to the wire still like in the older cars?

yeah i'm still pretty confused lol

Yes, you repin the harness coming from the trans tunnel to match the Mustang connector. You will run into a problem with the TCC (torque converter clutch) solenoid. The 94-95 4R70Ws use a different one than the 96+ ones do. To my knowledge there isn't a TCC solenoid of the proper resistance that has the appropriate connector for the circuit board, so you would have to do some custom work to make it right. It may be easier in the long run to just swap the circuit board out for the harness and use all your electronics. That way there won't be any rewiring or modifications to the circuit board.
