Had to dig into the tranny because the 1-2 accum spring broke. So I am replacing the spring/cup/new style 1-2 piston. stock specs

I was reading up on doing the Mild 300hp J-Mod. and was wondering if I needed to order a different 1-2 piston and spring? or will it be ok with such a mild change in the VB?

Quick one on the 2-3 accumulator spring. What advantages am I gaining by removing this spring?

I know for a fact that I will do the mod so the 2-1 downshift will be faster than waiting for paint to dry.

Whats the difference between Merc III and Merc V? and do I have to run Merc V if I do the J-Mod.

(its up in the air tonight.. Monday is when the parts that I ordered arrive, and I would like to have more "positive" and quicker shifts, but I am strongly debating doing this.. I want to do it.. but SHOULD I do it.)

Thanks :)

While you are in there be sure to put in the new stlyle cups for both the 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts. I left both the stock springs in the 1-2 and it shifts plenty hard. I took out the spring in the 2-3 and it gives a good firm shift.

PS When my 1-2 spring broke it ruined the case so be sure to check that out.

I say to leave the springs in also. I had mine out of the 1-2 accumulator, and the shift was pretty violent at times. Pull the 2-3 spring out no matter what, and it will shift very fast, not real firm though.

thats the first simple transmission problem I have seen in a while.

You will need a good set of snap ring pliars to get the snap ring off, and you will need a bottle jack and a block of wood to get the new accumulator back in its bore with the springs. JH
Springs? as in more than one?

:leftright: I only pulled one out (3 pieces) no metal chunks in the pan. I'm crossing my fingers that was a typo. my n00b heart just entered my throat.

I see the diagram on that page with the 1-2 accum with the upper and lower spring. there was one spring in there and that was the lower one. I'm freaking out now..

its not a bad thing to have just the bottom spring in there. without the top spring your trasmission was set up for the softest possible shifts. With both springs the shifts a a very little bit firmer than the set up you had. and when you do the jmod, you want the top spring in and no bottom spring, this will give you the firmest shifts. I'm not sure why your top spring is gone, maybe the tranny had work done to it before? i'm not sure if any of them came from the factory like that.
