Ok, according to the gear chart in the tech articles, it says 5 is a 3.27 rearend, and an E is a 3.27 trac-lok.

Does this apply for only the 8.8's, or 7.5's as well.
I'm asking because at a salvage yard last night I noticed a few 3.8L birds had 5's, and one had an E under the axle code.

The size of the engine determines the size of the ring gear. 3.8L had 7.5" and 4.6L/5.0L/3.8L SC had the 8.8".

I know that much. What I'm referring to, is did the 7.5" come with a 3.27 Trac-Lok as well? If so, are the codes on that chart the same for both the 7.5" and 8.8"?

Can't tell you if the axle code carries over, but but you look at the pumpkin itself, you'll see a metal tag on one of the rear cover bolts. Look on that tag and it'll say 3 27 or 3L27 to show the gear ratio and whether or not its a trac-loc differential.

Would you happen to know which side the tag is on? There is mud on the exterior's of the carriers, so it's kinda hard to read anything with scraping it all off. Lol.

Yes, the code carries over to the 7.5".

I appreciate it Rod. So I guess I have two 7.5" rear-end's, with 3.27's within grasp. I just don't get why they would offer 3.27's with the 7.5

Wouldn't it be easier just to cut the 7.5 out of the equation, and put in an 8.8?

My 89 cougar has code E and it's a 8.8 3.27 track-lock rear. I had a 91 T-bird that had code Y 8.8 3.08 open rear and two 90 cougar's with code 5 8.8 3.27 open rears.

I have never seen one with a 7.5 yet.

Since you seem to be all about the 3.27's...find me a nice 3.27 T-Lok for my SC :D

I'll take some pictures. I took a look at the Dif, and it's definitely a 7.5", and according to the tag on the door jamb, it has 3.27's.

I'm probably going to my local scrap-yard sometime this week. If I see anything I'll give you a heads up.
