lately when ive been driving with my a/c on i can smell radiator fluid on the car. i already by passeds the heater core so i dont know what it is. also my car has been running hott ocassionally. i have no clue why it does this but when it does run hot the coolant over flow tank fills with boiling coilant. alright thanks for your help and if you need any more info just ask

Take it to the radiator shop and get it flushed.
You may have a clogged radiator.
If it is not dripping from the radiator you are probabaly smelling the fluid that is boiling out of the radiator overflow.

with a little luck your heater core may still be ok. That means you don't have to take the dash off to fix it.

A radiator flush should be pretty cheap and you can't hurt anything in the process.

When you by-passed the heater core, you must have had to add more coolant after putting everything back together.

Did you bleed out the air when you were adding anti-freeze?

Sorry, not up on the xr7's, which engine do you have?

If it's the 3.8 it has a vent plug on the intake, and this allows air to escape while adding anti-freeze

ohhhhh that dosent sound right.

last time my overflow tank overflowed it was b/c of a blown headgasket, also check the oil for coolant to be on the safe side. :rolleyes:

the symtoms are............

coolant in the oil and white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Or if its really blown your car can also tremble a lot. Like if you had a messed up motor mount.

I had an 86 Cougar LS with the 3.8, and with a head gasket leak;
the car would run fine, and then in a matter of a few seconds, the temperature gauge would peg all the way to the red, accompanied by some knocking or pinging sounds from the engine. The coolant level was down by one-half gallon after each episode.

I gave this car back to the dealer, and I purchased another 86 Cougar LS, but this one had the 5.0 Low and behold, after a couple of years, the car would occassionally get low on coolant. It did not run hot. The dealer kept testing it, and found nothing wrong. Finally, the head gasket let loose between a cylinder and a coolant passage in the block, and I had a white smoke cloud pouring out of the exhaust.

Dealer fixed it, and paid 75% of the repairs.
