From my first visit to this site well over a year ago, I was intrigued about the "J-mod" (as we call it!). I asked questions, read posts, read and reread and reread the articles a lot, printed them out for reference, and read 'em again. I anted up the money and purchased the components for the 'simplified' version of the modification a month ago, located the drill bits locally, and read the articles again....and decided to put this mod on hold.

Last week, I learned one of my brothers, the one who's handy at fixing cars, was coming into town for a visit/vacation, so I asked for his assistance.

Yesterday, I decided to do the mod. It was raining heavily, but we had access to my mom's garage.

I gave him the articles and explained what I wanted to do. After a few minutes of reading the articles, he said "Let's get to it!"

We dug in, and a few hours later, were finished.

I was impressed. Impressed at how easy the work was, at how well the transmission responds, and at how quickly my brother picked up on what was to be completed. I doubt I would've been able to do this without his help.

A quick note of thanks to the people who wrote the articles, and contributed valuable information over the last year while I researched this modification. :thumbsup:

To those who haven't done this on their 4R70W: I highly recommend doing this modification. Have someone assist if you aren't trans-knowledgable - I found it helped immeasurably. Completing this modification is well worth it!

i'm in michigan too, in midland to be exact. maybe you could offer a little help to me:D
still needs to get some drill bits and mercon v then i'm all ready to go.
waiting for my new alternator for now.......

I agree, its incredibly easy, even if you don't have auto tranny experience. I didn'ty have any experience inside any tranny when did mine, by myself i might add. It definately makes the car more fun to drive, but with no 1-2 bottom spring, it can be an adventure in the rain. Because of the streets out here I've gotten VERY skilled at controlling the back end of my car because of that fun fun 1-2 shift. :D

wonder without experienced in tranny how long will it take? i'm planning on the overdrive servo too and i have the 94 trans.....
help also would be great...hint....hint.....:D

Well, taking my time due to lack of experience, as well as working alone, on top of doing it in a parking lot, with the front tires on a curb to lift the front end (no jacks)...

I did it in about 4 hours, start to finish. :D

also wonder 90 inch lbs. = ??ft. lbs???
i'm from sae educated(cm, km instead of inches, miles) so thiese metric are driving me nuts....

THE most difficult parts for me were lining up the TC drain plug (had to resort to a screwdriver and moving the flexplate one tooth at a time) and worming in and our from under the car countless times (ground effects make this low car even lower) :rolleyes:

Last time I checked an inch was a smaller part of a foot. But I've been out of school for a while, but I believe that inches are sae measurements as well.

Not a problem! I wonder, on occassion, how many musicians are on this site. I majored in performance, at Bachelor's and Master's level, and do freelance work around the Detroit area, after being with the USAF Field Bands for 7½ years. Are you majoring in Music Ed?

I've seen Mercon V at Autozone, in addition to Ford dealerships. Prices are reasonable.

I located all the drill bits at Production Tool Supply in Redford. Their phone: 877-869-8150; their website: www.pts-tools.com. I heard that Harbor Freight Tools has an inch-pound torque wrench for under $20. They have a location in Southgate, MI. Website: www.harborfreight.com (734-281-6365). Their website states one is opening in Lansing soon. Sears has ¼" ratchet extension sets for $7, and they'll come in helpful if you're using a ¼" inch-pound torque wrench.

Installing a transmission cooler takes less than an hour. I did it last year, in the cold of Thanksgiving weekend.

Draining the trans fluid for the J-mod, using the method in A-Train's article (see Steps 2 & 3 in this article), took very little time. Draining the torque coverter took about 20 minutes. Very little oil was left in the pan (less than a quart). I used a 28qt. storage bin ($3-4 at Wal-Mart) to catch the oil. It seems the most time-consuming aspect was removing and installing all the bolts. All told, my brother and I finished in about 3 hours (we did take a one-hour dinner break during the procedure).

90 inch-pounds equals 7½ foot-pounds (using 12 inch-pounds equals 1 foot-pound math).

I had my brother assist, so I'm not certain how much help I can offer. What help are you looking for? Midland is about 135 miles north of my location...

one stupid point to make...print everythinhg out, i forgot to print out the hole drilling location and couldnt access the site till 11pm...i did it on new years day and the site must have been down for maintence.

my torque tool starts at the minimum at 10 ft. lbs and is a 1/2 inch drive socket, that's mean i need to buy a smaller one. just wonder what hp level you drill it to?
i'm looking to drill it to 300hp spec level. if you do to that level and if you didn't need the drill bits anymore then i'll be very happy to buy it from you because i really have no ideas about the drill bit size. just don't want to make any mistake to buy the wrong size. i just don't thrust my self for doing these kind of stuff on the transmission, so at least people who already do it maybe have little more experience than me at least to supervise me.:D
125 miles away........so close yet seems so far........

Umm, I've only got the Mild/Gear change specs and the car can be an adventure in rainy weather as it is. I've been advised that the 300hp specs can make the car near undrivable in the rain.

The mild/gear change is enough to break the tires loose on the 1-2 and all the shifts are quite firm as it is. 300hp specs may be too much unless you're actually making in excess of 300hp.

I went with the mild specs and replaced the 1-2 lower spring, haven't experienced the hard shifts that others who left the lower spring out have been getting. Although I guess it's all in what you want. If you want a neck snapper don't do the lower spring, if you want it to feel more like stock replace it. Either way you won't be sorry for doing the mod, it really cleans up the shifts to the point that you might not recognize it as your trans. While your down there do yourself a favor and add a cooler, you won't be sorry.
