am i better off buying gears new or saving a few bucks from e-bay? i see them with under 10,000 miles. some say brand new with some surface rust.......would those be ok? also......what do i need to buy to make my 93 mark VIII rear housing into a trac-loc? can i take it into a shop and have them do it for me? or can i buy a part to go inside it? i don't know much about these.

I'm not a pro in this by no means but I would go with new gears. They are machined in sets and after wear I would think it would be difficult to haeve them set-up properly to wear just as they were set when new. Summit sells their own name gearsets for $139. for either 3.73's and 4.10's for the 8.8 inch ring gears. As for the LSD differential you may have to shop around or see what's availabe in the classifieds here. Thy can be pricey and many require the jump to 31 spline axles which are much stronger than stock. Noe how about a guru's opinion! Mark

Used gears are fine if set up properly, youll need a trac loc from a bird or have a mustangs one setup properly. PM Teeps on this board for a good price on a trac loc.

You wont need to change axles, cobras got 31 splines, we have 28

what exactly is a trac loc? is that an internal part? or the entire unit?
Its internal, its what the ring gear bolts to. Search ebay for 8.8 t-loc or trac-loc or posi, youll see what i mean.
