Ok, well I've been told that bad U joints cause the rear end to shake. I also have a slight click when I go into Reverse and sometimes when I go into Drive. It's a Click noise. Here's my problem: From about 10 - 35 mph the rearend of my car will kind of shimmy. Kind of like really bad warped breaks in the front when you stop from 55 60 mph... but with the back, and its not the breaks. I re-torqued the lug nuts.. and it did the same thing. What would cause my rear end to shake like this? What exactly do U joints do? Someone please help, I hate this and it SUCKS! (BTW, my tires are in need of replacement.. could this also do it? I just need money to buy tires..) Any help is APPRECIATED! Thanks!

I'm probably wrong here, but have you checked to make sure your tires were lined up on the hub properly? As in the valve stem being inline with the yellow lug. I had this problem once and that was the source. Have you lost any weights off your rims to throw your tires out of balance? Is it one side or both sides?

The yellow painted lug's are only found on the front hubs, and not the rear.

Does your car have 4-wheel disc brakes, or do you have drums on the rears?

worn IRS differential bushings can cause the click and drivetrain vibration.

The car is 4 wheel Disk, non ABS. It's a 97 4.6L w 61k on it.. (I think it is all stock.. no repairs yet) and I dont have the weights on the back rims, only the front. And it feels like its the Right Rear wheel. Anymore help ? Suggestions? and How much would the IRS bushings cost?

I jacked up the right rear.. everything seems OK. I did the check where you twist the driveshaft (for the U Joints) is there anyway to see if my IRS bushings are bad?

On the pumkin you will see the little ears on the shaft end that have the bushings in them, you can push on that area and check for play and such.

I just checked the bushings. There a very hard rubber substance, and I wiggled the whole pumpkin, no play. I pushed in on the rubber, no play. Both of them wont even move. Any other Ideas? :( :confused:

You say you don't have weights on the back wheels? Are they ballanced?


Note, I'm still chasing a similar problem myself, swapping out the upper control arms and irs bushings when I put the pumpkin in in a couple of weeks and see if that helps. Mine are almost 9 years old.

ok I just noticed this. EVERY wheel has one, accept the front right rim! ALSO: THe rims we're on backwards.. (The rear's we're facing front, and the fronts we're facing the rear) I switched the front left rim, to the right side, and the right side to the left. Could that be causing it? But it still feels like its coming from the rear...

EDIT: all the tires are Firestone Stock's accept the front right rim, it came with a new tire.. I guess because they had a blowout on 1 of the tires. I bought it like this.

Well if you swapped tire position and it still is coming from the same area then that lets you know it's not the tires.

My first vibration problem was out of round tires.

I didnt touch the rear wheels though, only the front. Could it be because I switched the front rims? Maybe before I switched them, the front tires we're balanced.. and afterwards I screwed up the balance because there is no weight on the front right rim ???

Well it might not need one.. a tire is balanced on it's own usually and then put on the car so location wouldn't alter it.

You should have tires re-balanced every so often, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to do so if they haven't been in the past few thousand miles.

Ok thanks for all your help guys, and thanks SD =) My stock Firestones are bald, so I will be getting some new tires soon, and I will have it looked at, and the new tires will have to be balanced anyways.. lets see if it goes away after I get new tires =) Thanks!!!

did you ever put fix-a-flat in your tire? if so that can cause and unbalance in your tire. how bad are the rear tires? do you think the belt is broken? since you stated the rear tires are bad, and winter is coming, just replace the tires first then go from there. it sounds like the tires to me.

Tires would cause the wobble but not the shifting click since the car isn't in motion when he's doing that.
