Upper pieces lift off; they're held on by spring loaded clips. Rear lower piece has clips that come off which you can find under the trunk lid.

I stripped with 220 and primed/painted with the Duplicolor black trim paint some 6 years ago. Still look good today.

I am going to take it off so i can strip it and paint it without overspray worrying, i'm not terribly good with the rattle can. Was going to go with regular paint or trim paint.

What way do i pull on the trim to remove it?

Please use looking at the car from the nearest bumper as your frame of reference for direction, that way less confusion is created. for example rear would be done with my knees touching the rear bumper, same for the front.
