There's a possibility my EEC has been lost in the mail. In order to get my car back on the road do I need to locate another EEC with the same code as my old one, or will any EEC from a similar model work? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

As far as I know, here's how it goes: A 1994-95 4.6L EEC will not work, the hardware is different. You need a 96-97 EEC from a 4.6L mn12. a V6 wont work. The software may be different with a different code, but it will operate the car just fine. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Silver95, that's how I thought it worked, but I wanted to double check with the experts. I spoke with a couple of used parts "specialists" from the salvage yards and they told me I needed to find one with the same code.

I found one for $50 at the following link:

http://www.car-part.com/

Choose "computer box engine".

Any 96 Bird or Cat will work as long as you pick the same motor size and close ID. There are two types of programs. California, MA and NY and the rest of the USA. Since you are in California I guess you need that program.

Make sure that you verify that it is correct before you buy.

I used car-part.com a while back. I found an EEC for $25! Yours might not be as cheap since, as mentioned above, you will need a Calfiornia tuned computer. Everything should work fine if you get a used EEC with the stock tuning.

Where'd you get your EEC from in the first place? Did they give you a tracking number or something like that?

Hope everything works out.

It's not definite that my EEC is lost just yet. I bought a chip several months ago but I haven't been able to use it because the dealer had reflashed my EEC at some point in the past so my EEC no longer matched the code printed on the fender and EEC. Two weeks ago I sent the chip and EEC out to get things sorted out, and I'm still waiting on their return. :(

Thanks again for the input.

It's a long story and I'd rather not post it on the board because I don't want to start a flame war or bash anyone's business publicly. Feel free to PM me or send an email to [email protected] and I'll provide more details.
