I had to replace the thermostat in my bird it stuck partil shut and caused the car to get warm but I caught it before it got past 2/3 on the gauge. I pulled it out and noticed that around 3 of the bras rivits were cracks. I talked to them at orriels and they said that they stoped carring them because of the high rate of failures. I went ahead and installed a new failsafe unit for my car. I also did the thermostat mod which is drilling 1 1/8 of a inch hole in the thermostat. I notice on the old stat woluld notice the temp going down at 194 and close at 172. The new stat with the mod temp would start going down at 188 and close at 176 providing much less tempeture swings. The temp swings on the old stats were done 2 weeks before it failed.

Good luck if you can still even find Robert Shaw thermostats. When I went looking for my 180 I couldn't find them anywhere.

AutoZone doesn't carry them anymore and I couldn't find them online. It seemed like they just disappeared from the planet. I even went to their web site and they don’t mention automotive thermostats at all. :2huh:

do you have a recomendation for a 180* 'stat to get instead? Ive had a Rob Shaw unit for quite a while and the cooling seems kinda funky. I guess its time to add to the list.

I ended up using the Ford OEM for a Lightning. It is supposed to be 180, but I've heard from some Lightning owners that it is a little higher. But I haven't been able to confirm it one way or the other, so who knows.

There are probably better thermostats out there, but I try to stay OEM if possible.

But that's just me.

Looks like we gotta find a reliable source of 180* stats now since the Robert Shaw used to be the recommended one...

When I had the head swap done back in April '03 I used Fords thermostat.
Part # XL3Z-8575-AA, $7.28. The box was labled 180*.
Sounds like we have a winner!

after spending ten years in ford dealers and seeing what ones work and dont, no aftermarket really works as well as a factory ford tstat. dont know why, but most of my outside only use the factory units as well. has something to do with inproper temp ranges and such.

I'm also using a 180* Stant without any problems. My temp stays pretty steady between 185*-195*.

the mod is simply drilling a hole (1/8 i think) to allow some flow like the oem does, except the stocker has a check ball.
