I found a couple auto Supercoupes in a local salvage (Pull-A-Part). The fat axles could be bought real cheap. Is just the shaft larger or are the joints better also? Since I already have a couple spare LX axles would they be a worthwhile upgrade?

They also have several MarkVIII's with complete pumpkins going for $65.00 + tax. A few 5.0 tbirds and lots of 4.6/3.8 birds also.
I actually went out there looking for MarkVII LSC axle. They had a few last time I was out there but they are now scrapped.

The SC fat axles are the strongest stock axle available for our cars. Next up is the mark 8 axles, then 4.6, then 5.0, then 3.8. I'm not sure on all the differences between them aside from the obviously thicker shaft.

i dont think there is any difference in the boot material. just the thickness of the shaft. where in oklahoma are you located?

most probably you'll break the joint before you twisted the shaft.

yep and buying used shafts may not be the best idea since the boot may already be old. new ones cant be that much i would think.

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but the shafts in my 95 4.6 bird are the same thickness as ones I took out of a 93 mark. We are talking about the long part between the two boots right?

Only the 5 speed SC's had a Fat axle on the Passenger side which is the longer of the 2 axles.
The axles are the same length side to side. You can run 2 SC fat axles if you want.

Just to add to the confusion...from what I've seen parting out and building SC's and XR7's, some of the autos received the Fat Shaft on the passenger side as well.

The autos I saw had a thicker axle on one side. There were 2 cars the same setup, side by side. The other side was same as my '93 LX 5oh.

Now the '89 5 spd SC I just scrapped has a very fat axle on the passenger side and a driver side axle much larger than the LX.

The MarkVIII axles in my car are the exact same skinney ones as a '93 LX.

I just found the charger for my camera after moving and will snap some pics to show the difference.

Just out of curiousity, what is the purpose for a larger shaft on one side? To even out the traction or to reduce harmonics would be my guess.

One wheel receives more torque so it gets a thicker axle.

The different size/mass shafts side-to-side were used in an attempt to reduce oscillation harmonics/wheelhop. GM did the same thing with the new Corvettes.

Well, having just gotten a '95 5-speed, I can tell you it didnt do much for the wheel hop.

Has anyone broken the shaft before the joint on the reg 5.0 shafts? It is my understanding that the joints fail first no matter which shaft you have. I can't remember someone twisting the shaft but I sure could be wrong.

I've never seen the center shaft break, but I have seen the stub shafts break quite a few times. Though now that I say that, I'm trying to remember if all of those were Raxles. Either way, quite a few snapped at the 2005 SC/XR7 Shootout, and I think CobraRThunder snapped his fourth Raxle at the 07 Shootout.
