Ok the old "gasket" was torn missing etc.. from it's groove. I have a spare felpro gasket for the 8.8 laying around. How should I go about sealing the cover. I also have a new can of right stuff rtv gasket maker.

Should I:

1: fill the groove with the rtv and bolt it on
cover/rtv/housing

2: fill the groove with rtv, rtv the diff housing and use the felpro gasket in between. So cover/rtv/gasket/rtv/housing

3: install the gasket dry with no rtv in the groove in the cover
cover/gasket/housing

4: fill the groove with rtv, put the gasket on dry against the housing
cover/rtv/gasket/housing

My local drivetrain/diff shop recommended method 1 or method 2 just wanted a second opinion.

The groove was meant for RTV.

I personally like the reusable rubber gaskets from FRPP (I’m not sure if they still offer them).

Very thin coat of RTV on both sides of the gasket, produces a solid seal, and simple removal when/if needed. :D

yeah, ive done both my 90 and 95 with just RTV in the groove, still no leaks from the 95 after like 3 years, still watching the 90, though it leaks from the halfshaft seals anyway :p

heck i had no idea they even had a gasket for it...
