I'm about to go around and pick up the parts to do the J-Mod on my transmission, but I've got a few questions.

It'd be nice if I could do this at home, but the higher authorities (parents) complained about me changing my oil.

I've got a 1994, looking to do the less-than 300HP modification. How much in parts will I run roughly?

is it something I can go down to my friend's house, throw up on jack stands, and do in about 5-6 hours provided i've got all the parts?

I can sure as hell change my oil and I can do tranny fluid too. I've rebuilt carbs on old bikes, and this doesn't seem like anything much harder.

You should be able to do it OK. Besides regular tools, you'll want an in/lb torque wrench, (NOT ft/lb), for tightening the valve body bolts, a large, (6" or so), C-clamp, to compress the 1-2 accumulator spring, a HEAVY DUTY set of snap ring pliers for removing the 1-2 accumulator - at least 1" in size - you'll just break regular snap ring pliers, and a good set of high jack stands. You'll also want an 18mm wrench that you can get to the crank pully bolt with, to use for lining up the torque converter for draining, and the correct adapter fittings with 6' of clear plastic tubing to use if you're pumping the fluid out from the top tranny cooler fitting.

The above assumes you'll be changing the accumulator, (you want to), but doesn't cover what you might need if you're doing more than just the accumulator, seperator plate and gaskets, and filter. You'll also need to track down all the correct size drill bits.

It's a pretty straightforward deal... if you're uncomfortable with any of it, I may be able to help... wilkes-barre isnt that far away.

i couldn't find any drill bits that are suitable. i want the 300hp settings and i don't even know how to use the mcmaster-carrs' website(i'm an idiot)
can someone please post the pn in that website for all the drill bits that i need or any conversions from metric to sae like 0.081mm = ?? inches for drill bits?

Doublecheck the sizes you need for your transmission, but for
my '96 I ordered the following bits from McMaster-Carr:

0.076 = #48
0.081 = #46
0.100 = #39
0.125 = 1/8"
0.180 = #15

I can also speak highly for McMaster, they sent exactly what I ordered and fast. Make sure you keep the drill bits in their respective bags though, 'cause some are so small you can't read a size on the side of the bit.

Or..spend $10 for a drill gauge plate that has holes marked with the drill sizes so you can check them.

ACE hardware around here has most of these in stock for about 1.99 each.
That is where I got mine - they are Hansons.

As far as identifying them, I use a micrometer and tag them with their exact diameter/number.

Sometimes, they are packaged wrong - better safe than sorry!

I just used a set from work, (also McMaster-Carr)... I think I had every drill bit imaginable... and yes.. I went through 2 pairs of snap-ring pliers. I had 2 crappy stanleys then I brought home my blue-point from work and that worked like a charm. And instead of the C clamp... I used my hydrolic jack and an aluminum tube with 2 rubber caps on the side to compress the solenoids. Worked like a charm. And be careful when you torque those bolts down... I had an in/lb and I snapped one of the bolts while tightening them up. I hate extrating bolts. I had to wait an extra day to get my extractor kit.... but the second time I did it, (to my friends 94 4.6 Cougar) it took me about 3 hours. Sucked bc I didnt want to drain my ATF with the hose... (I dont like the thought of the engine running while red fluid is coming out....) so I just unbolted one side of the tranny pan then loosened the rest and it just fell right into the pan, then took it off. Also remember to put in the filter BEFORE you bolt the pan and put 12 quarts of ATF in there... k? If you do it more than 4 hours under there... your arms can get QUITE tired.
