Will the " MN12 Performance Inc. Shifter Box Extension Kit for T5 and T45 " from Mn12performance.com, fit a T-56 6 speed transmission ? It only says t5 and t45... I beleive that it would fit, but I would like to know for sure... also, does anybody know how the bellhousing would work ? What should I do about that... I would love to throw a T-56 6 speed in my M-5 1995 T-bird SC... Thanks Guys,

David.:D

Can you explain what an "M-5" Supercoupe is? That's a "model" I've never heard of.

About Rich's shifter extension. The best thing to do is post your question over on his forum. I doubt it will work for what you want to do. It was designed to put a T-5 in the T-bird. It does use a T-56 shifter though.

If your trying to put a T-56 in, your shifter location won't be much of a problem. It will be about a 1.5" ahead of the stock location. The flywheel will hit the bellhousing, so some fabbing will be nessasary. There's a lot of other stuff that will have to be special built, so good luck man.

Yeah.. he went through a lot of unnecessary trouble too.

I guess no one has actually researched putting in a T56 besides reading that fella's article. Fact is, it isn't hard at all. I have all the pieces needed and it will get done eventually. I was going to create my own article but I've decided not to.

Why's that? Too much work? It would be nice to have another article to refer to besides that other guy's article. I like to see people do things that weren't supposed to work and making it work well.

Here is a GM tranny that uses the mechanical speedo (bottom of page). Link

I was thinking that it wasn't the case that made the GM tranny longer, it was the bellhousing. So...if you change the bellhousing then you would lose the advantage of the extra length. It has been a while since I looked into this, but I think that is right. Other than that it will work. This can be done, and if I had a little bit more money I would do it.

Here is another idea if you are going to upgrade the whole car to a performance oriented stage. You could buy a mild-steel kmember (when they come out from AJE) and get them to move the engine mounting spot back 1.5-2in., then you could use the ford t-56 and be in the right spot.:) If I do it, that is what I will do.

No... the case is identical. The input shaft is longer on the LS1 tranny than it is on the LT1. The length difference in shifter location is the tailhousing casting. Look at them and it's easy to see that the LS1/LT1 shifter is farther back than the Ford/Viper trans.

Alright. I just wasn't sure. I can probably get a hold of an LS1 t56 pretty cheap, but I don't know about spending almost 500 on a bellhousing.

93sc, i know...i've actually read the walk-through from that guy a long time ago but as far as I know, he's not too active on the website(s) so like everybody else, i'd like to see some one else do it for further reference.

T-56 Gear Ratios. What exactly are the T-56 gear ratios? Since the T-56 is avail. from different car companies, it's probably also avail. with different gear ratios. Next, how do T-56 gear ratios compare to M5R2 (early AND late) gear ratios? Are there custom T-56 OD ratios available, maybe from aftermarket vendors? Hmmmmmm? The whole T-56 question opens up more questions than it answers.

There are different ratios, but the one I am looking at is 2.66, 1.78, 1.3, 1, .74, .5. All of the T-56s are either Borg-Warner(Tremec bought them out) or Tremec.
