the shifter button poped out of its spot on my 94 cougar. not the OD button but the one you push to change gears. does it just pop back in or something.

yes, it just slides back in. there is a retaining clip on it that may be broken, or worn out

I don't think it will pop out on it's own, see if the handle is fully seated (pushed down all of the way)

I know that the shifter handle in mine threw pieces all over the place when I took it off to replace the PNRD12 light.

Actually, it's a common problem as the button ages. The end of the button has a "hoop" which retains it inside the handle over the pin. The hoop breaks, and the spring forces the button out.

Short answer: You likely need a new button.
