Hey, I just got an 89 T-Bird with a 3.8 and only 73,000 miles on it but to me it seems to be shifting a little rough or hard most of the time. Not a big jerk or anything but definitly not a totally smooth transaction. Is this normal or should i be looking to do something to the tranny? Any help would be great, thanks!

Well, then start by checking the grommet on the trottle linkage. IIRC, that has an AOD behind it and those are known to act funny if that grommet is missing/broken. If it's missing, then don't drive it until you replace the grommet or you will be buying a new AOD shortly.

If all looks well there, then check the fluid. Is it low? Too full? Does it smell burnt or look darker than normal (not a bright red color)? If so then all you may need is a trans. fluid and filter change.

Start with the simple stuff like the guys said. Check the grommet ASAP, if it is broken use a couple zip ties to hold it on till you can grab a new one (I never did replace mine the ties worked just fine lol) and change the fluid, mine acted funny for a bit till I changed the fluid/filter, I changed it every spring and never had a problem and that was with a hella lot more miles on it than yours.

i checked the linkage from the throttle (right on top of the engine?) and that seemed fine. The fluids are good... so do you just think the tranny's bad?

ive been having similar trouble with my aod. i talked to a tranny guy in town that everyone and there dog refered me to, and he said a good valve body cleaning, replacing the springs, and flushing and filling the tranny would most likely fix it. so if u know of a mechanic in town that everyone in town trust, go to him and see what he thinks, but there are some knowledgble people on here, but its so much easier to diagnostic it when the mechanic can actually check the car out.

You TV pressure might be too high or the VB might have a shift kit in it already.
