When the car is parked downhill, and shift into reverse, I hear a slight clunking sound, engine running. It doesn't happen all the time. car has 90K miles, suspension all original. Any ideas?

it's probably your U-joint. one or both of them are loose and should be replaced. Mine have gone pretty bad and I hear the same sound except it's all the time when I change gears.

change your gears from R to D and back again and see if you can hear the clunking.

If all of that checks out, you may want to check the torque on your control arms. I had a similar clunk that was the result of a loose bolt, which caused the control arm to shift.
