I bought Jeffbird95's old LX. 01 mustang tranny, 3800 stall, j-mod.

Its having some shift problems between the 3 to 4 shift. everything else works like it should, every other shift is strong and firm.

At WOT it takes a few secs to shift and the car does hit the rev limit, then shifts.

Just crusing, i feel it start to shift, the rpms go up a little, then it they slowly goin down as it shifts. weird.

Im goin to get a some videos of how the car acts tomorrow.

Im goin to pull the pan sometime this week and wanted to know where the 3 to 4 shift accumlator/spring was?

NEVER shift 3-4 at WOT

There isn't an accumulator, just a servo to apply the band, most of it sounds tune related in an effort to prevent WOT OD shifts
+1. A WOT 3-4 can and will break the stub shaft.

The truly creative ones have broken that shaft into three pieces, lol.

Alan posed a pic awhile back of a drum the shaft turned in as it broke, iirc.

:)

When the 3-4 shift happens, it's in 2nd and 4th at the same time for the amount of overlap time in the release time of one clutch, and the apply time of the band.

If it applies before it releases, it breaks something. :)

Sounds just like what mine does on the 2-3 shift.

Since 4th doesn't have an accumulator, possibly poor adjustment of the 4th gear band?

3-4 shift is different on the later trannys, unless you adapt the tune a bit.

If it was tuned a long time ago, it may not be correct.

Without my tune, my tranny would just about hit a neutral 3-4 in a 25mph zone, with no or little throttle.

It felt like I was going to do a neutral drop when I hit the gas again...

it could very well be my tune.

is there anyway i could change this with my X-cal 3?

I'm not sure.

The tune I got from Lonnie has the corrections; as do the tunes I wrote with my PRP.

Most of the correction is in the updated SCT transmission value file; I changed a lot of things by hand, but not the pressures.

I don't know what value files are on an xcal3; you need the one for a newer tranny.

i have this same problem, it was only doing right at 40 mph with slight flare then shift to od. this past week it has gone from 1-200 rpm flare to 1000-1500 rpm flare and hit hard into 4th. i was thinking of changing filter, fluid, and dropping vb to see any broken springs or scarred cylinders/accumulaters. any other ideas?

First idea that comes to my mind is a poor 95 Main VB needed a LOT more than just a JMOD to keep a good TC alive- See:

so you are suggesting that the pressure vavle regulator and boost sleeve kit?

I get the same with my truck....97f150 4r70w, 4x4, 4.6L.
cruising, and when its time to change gears the rpms jump way up, then clunks/slams into gear.

since its not a 95, what would be a solution to my fix?
I recently changed fluid(mercon5), and filter....didn't help.

truck is stock with a stock tune....no j-mod.
116,000 miles.

Originally I was going with a 2001 VB on my Rebulit 96 Tranny but the 2001 Main VB Casting was scored so I scavenged it for parts & did the below on my 96 Main VB with excellent results:

Sonnax Main Regulator Valve (black) & the shorter stiffer Spring fm 2001 Main VB.

O Ringed End Cap fm 2001 Main VB in 2-3 Shift Valve.

Sonnax Solenoid Pressure Regulator (black) Valve from 2001 VB but used the heavier 96 Spring vice the TEENY Sonnax Spring from the 2001 VB... & by teeny I mean it slipped over the small tit on the PR Valve vice bearing on the flat "lands" like all the other Springs do in the like PR Valves of both VB's

Stayed with Jerry's desired Orange (or Brown) Spring in Converter Clutch Servo & 0D Servo as the 96 Main VB already had both - (2001 main VB had longer lighter CC Spring with entirely different OD Servo Assy & 2001 Sep Plate has Feed Hole for it, etc...)

Mild JMOD settings on 96 Sep Plate in keeping w/ my stock Motor.
