are you sure you haveone my '89 doesn't? #1 its on your pulley system so you can remove it and put on an idler pulley (don't know if they sell it for are setup) or what my friend did for his mustang was by a shorter belt and route it a different way totally bypassing the smog pump. It does give you a few more ponies by putting less load on your crank. It kinda looks like your air conditioning pump. As for its function it pumps more air into the exhuast to help reburn any extra pollutants in the catalytic converters.
