Thanks Again

chip is the only option, one from dennis or dom or pete or fordchip.com. There all the same chip, just different people. Don't have any urls though.

I wouldn't test out a removed speed limiter very much myself. You should get either a used driveshaft out of a 1993, note 1993, Lincoln Mark VIII. Or call and talk to Dennis about a Metal Matrix Driveshaft. Your stocker is a bigger POS than a 20yr old Rust Bucket Deluxe Yugo.

I varies from car to car. Some people hit it at 105, mine hits it around 109. Its depends on your tires or something.

Haha what you also have to think about is.... our speedo's aren't the most accurate in the world... mine i think tells wrong by +/- 2 MPH so who knows....

LOL...

Here we are...8 years later and we still have questions like..."how do I remove the speed limiter".

The limiter is based on many inputs and it's not exactly at 105 mph. Or could it be that your speedo is not 100% correct?

My speed governor kicked in at 4,650 rpm with my AED supercharged T-Bird when in third gear with a factory program in my EEC-V. N/V was 46.5 rpm/mph. The governor kicked in exactly at 103 mph according to Jimmy C. and the WINPEP software at LaRocca's performance.

I agree with these guys, you need good tires (V or ZR rated), a nice MMC driveshaft, at least an 11.25" Mark TC and flexplate and a chip from Fordchip.com or Dennis R.

An added warning. Keep in mind how smooth the cars are. Removing the speed limiter has lead to another addiction on my part, and it involves 3 digits :D The cars are fast, and dont be suprised to find yourself cruising at a comphortable 100+ whenever possible, its addictive.
Deffinatly need v+ rated tires. Why V rated? because, under the righ t condidtions, a mildly modified Tbird will go that fast :D With a J 2.0 chip, 90mm Lmaf, 3:27s, and true dual exhaust my bird was locked in at 152mph via K band. Not sure what cougars will do, they have a higher drag coeficient.
I have 3:73s now, no fun

Why only a 93 mark VIII drive shaft? What kind of drive shafts did the Tbird SC's have? They did not have a speed limiter, right?

all the birds and cougies have limiters... it's part of the EEC... Whenever I have my chip done, i'm going to ask to leave the speed limiter... just change it to 110... it sounds like a better number lol I don't like taking the chance of doing 120 or whatever and a driveshaft break.... not something i wanna go through so i figure might as well leave the speed limiter on there, cause if i take it off, i WILL break something.... i got a foot like no other man lol

So basically the speed limiter is only based on the org. speed rating of the tires, not the construction of the drive shaft, right? What was the speed limiter on the super coupes from the factory? Lastly, what type construction is the drive shaft on the police crown vics?

Mostly...

No matter what the SC guys tell you, they have limiters. The man told me, the '94-'95 SC was limited to about 125 mph. He should know best.

Some of the 4.6L Police cars use a Metal Matrix Composite driveshaft. I believe they switched back to aluminum and set the limiters lower in the later years.

The CV Police cars were set as follows.

1998 were set at 130 mph with 3.27:1 gears, but were known to reach 135 mph on a flat road. 1999 weren't limited electronically and have been known to reach 140 mph with 3.55:1 gears. They also have been known to fail the 4R70W rear tailshift bushing and drop driveshafts. 2000 was electronically limited to 125 mph with 3.55:1 gears. I have no data on '01 and '02 Police cars. This info comes from a post that Bill W. made about 2 years ago and he worked on that Panther platform for NVH problems.

Spike,

Break the driveshaft? I doubt it. Most likey it will fail the tailshaft bushing, then spin it. The shaft will be forced out as the bushing galls up and it will drop. The shaft will break the weak safety loop near the rear pumpkin and force the gas tank down while you and your car catches fire...then explodes. I mean that is worst case...of course.

Care to quess what speed I was at when this photo was snapped? I'll give you a hint, 225/55ZR-16 tires with a 3rd gear pull to 5,600 rpm.

My car shifts into OD just before smacking the limiter in 3rd. Therefore I hit it right around 3100rpm in OD, but when I smack it, I've generally got OD locked out because I'm squeezin every horse out of it.
