my speedo needle sticks at the bottom when i start off driving slow, then i tap the plastic piece covering the speedo an the needle jumps up to the right speed, by the way the tach needle doesnt work at all.. any ideas here?

1. We do not have speedo cables.
2. We do not have gears in the speedo, instead it is on the tranny tailshaft.
3. our gauges are controlled directly by little electric motors. (excluding digital cluster)

See if you can borrow a friend's cluster, as eliminating the cluster itself would really help.

I had this same problem and posted it up here once how i fixed it. (cant seem to find it now). But anyways... I took my cluster out and had the front off. (forget why) I was jiggled the speedo needle a little bit to see if it was actully sticking in place. But it was so i just left it alone and assembled everything back to get. Then, it worked perfect and has been working just fine since. Its been at least 1 oil change since and working on another one soon. Some replied to my thread saying the same thing happened to them and they just cleaned off the connections to where the wireing harness connects to the cluster. Try those two things. Might be an easy fix!

the speedo gear is driven by the tranny output shaft (i think), and that sends a voltage to the front. not sure if it goes through the EEC and then to the cluster, or directly to the cluster.

If you look on the list of things a chip can fix, and one of them is tire size, then it does through the EEC. I'm too lazy to look right now.

I bet I can help

my 1991 Cougar has/had the same problem. The back of the gauge was warped from the sun/heat so it would only work at certain speeds and not go any higher. Well I pulled the needle out a bit and it cured it up. I had to pull the needle twice just out away from the face to make it not rub.

can u tell me how to remove the instrument cluster so i can get back there, oh this wont compromise the mileage will it

three 7mm bolts that hold on the plastic below the steering wheel. then pull it off.
three 8mm bolts at the bottom of the black plastic, and two just above the cluster.
then pull that panel off, careful to unhook the defroster. you will need to but the sterring wheel all the way down, wiggle and compress the panel, and pull it out to the top right.

now just take off the T-10 (15?) Torx bolts that go through the while plastic.

now pull the cluster foreward, there are two harness clips on the back, press in on the sides of them.

to get the cluster apart, use a T-5 (10?) Torx driver on the brass bolts.
