trying to get my speedo closer to the right speed.swapped a motor and transmission from a 97CV to my 96 bird.at seventy,speedometer says 80...put in a 20 tooth gear and it seems closer(have to check later with gps)...the gear is black though. just found out that this was meant for a manual transmission.could this harm the transmission?

yeah, 20 T black gear is for the manual trans, 20T orange gear is for the automatic. the only difference is is the snout on the end of the gear is longer for automatic transmissions. you can use the manual gear, but it wont seat/mesh correctly and will evenually strip the plastic gear teeth off.

you may need to go to a 21 T purple gear.

Steeda also has a 23t black gear for the automatics. I have yet to find anyone with a 22t gear for the automatics though.

ordered a 21 tooth purple from mustangs unlimited...shipping was almost as much as the part...
svtbird88 they also had a 23 tooth gear,i believe it was 17.95...compared to 8.95 for the other gears...
